Industry Software
What 3d software is used most in the game industry.
And what about the movie industry.

well, as far as I have been reading, max is the topper in the gaming section. And in films it's Maya but Softimage XSI is really hot now.

Hello there, I agree with blesson2k to a certain extent, because the programs are crossing over such a lot, and anyone is used in
any industry.

Yhea, itīs really hard to pinpoint a "leader", for example I think that the new DOOM III depended heavily on Lightwave.

I believe XSI has support for both the X-Box and PS2 so I think both may use XSI to develop games on those systems. I wouldn't be suprised though if you couldn't import animation and models from any of the larger 3d packages into any other package and then into any game system.
I think with the large industry firms it comes down to money, how much can they do on the cheapest package in the shortest time. So while it maybe a more expensive package if it can get the job done faster it's worth it. I saw something from EA Games for a Lead Developer job and it was requried that they be well versed in every large 3d software, Photoshop, all the scripting languages, also I think it had the compostiting softwares too. So start learning one and then once you have mastered that one it won't take too long to switch over to another package.

The reason I ask this is because I was reading a thing on software, and it said that Max was medium end, and Maya, SoftImage and Lightwave were high end, and I made the assumption that most companys would only use high -end software, and I don't want to learn a software when I could be learning another that will accually be used. I'm using Max student by the way.

medium end in prices maybe, but i hardly think that anyone in the industry regards max as lower end than maya, xsi, or lw. if anyone really thinks that one package is overall better than another i'd say that they probably don't have a very good grasp of production art.
alright that concludes my shameless plug for discreet ![]() -k |

I know Naughty Dog (Crash Bandicoot, Jax and Dexter) use Maya. Squaresoft (Final Fantasy 9, Kingdom Hearts) uses it also.
Core designs (Tomb Raider) uses Max ID (Quake) use to use it, now they are Lightwave or XSI? Never have found an article on it. Valve (half-life) used max, now for half-life 2 they went with Softimage. Croteam (Serious Sam) used Lightwave. Really it just depends. There is no "one" package for the game development realm. It just comes down to 1) What can we afford 2) what are our artists fluent in?

Dark Bob:
Thereīs a short video around the net (shouldnīt be to hard to find) wich talks about the Doom series, showing also some stuff about Doom III. During the interview to a character modeller, you can clearly see that heīs working on Lightwave.

I've seen unbelievable stuff made with all the major packages, and so have most here I'm sure. I've said it before, I think quality in CG has all to do with the artist and practically nothing with the 3d app.
