Time for an update

Decided to render the speaker, and the control pod (now with the side finished, and the dimensions on the front altered) together.
I was going to put two speakers in the render, but I must have ran out of memory, because my computer blue screened on me (it hardly does that), so I may have to grab some more.

I've made sure that the pod is pretty much 100% in line with the real dimensions. With the speaker model, I only did it with the front and not the back and sides (which I wish I did now), but it looks pretty accurate to me.

I'm so glad this is coming along so well though, and i'm determined to finish these models. They are the most detailed ones yet by me, but I believe I'm still in beginner territory when it comes to modelling really.

Heres the render

After I've finished these sets of models/textured, etc, I think I'll go back to the Dance Pad model for a bit, then carry on with the scene.

This is looking amazing! Great work so far, good modeling of my speakers. I'm definately looking forward to what you'll do with the materials.

As far as that crashing, did it happen when you tried to render or just in the scene operation. Because if it's just in the scene, I would recommend you have it display you're stuff as bounding box in their properties. That really makes big scenes faster.

Well, it hasn't done it since I must have been pushing the computer a bit too hard. I also had all the USB ports maxed out

Expect an update tommorow I've been working on the back portion (the holes), and tonight, I got someway into finishing the bottom port section (that was a bugger...), so as long as I don't hit any more smoothing issues, i.e too sharp/not enough control, you'll see me with more
I do need to make a slight curve on the unit itself, so I'll really have to make sure my mesh is laid out correctly.

After that though comes the sub, and the centre speaker stand.

Oh, and of course shading, and texturing (Can't forget about that can we)

Crits/suggestions are all welcome here

Sorry for the delay. I had more problems than expected, but here are 2 new renders.
Still just clays, but as I said, materials will come after

I tried to add more to the scene (hence the blank space), but Max kept crashing, and I'm guessing its a memory usage problem.

Anyhow, hope you like it

I'm still to add the circuit board at the back seen from the holes, but I'll hopefully get that done tomorrow, but other than that, this model's finally done!
Next is the sub...

As for me, its 4:18am, and I'm going to head to bed haha

All comments welcome of course:

The part where the base joins onto the main unit has far too few edges (8) to create the base, so i couldn't just carry on from there, as I had problems with the smoothing of the legs after extruding when I tried, that messed up flow with the main cone shape, etc.

So, I ended up having to make a new polygon object with more edges, and you can see this if you look closely, where the edge doesn't 100% match up, but I've tried my best to rectify this in the smoothing process.

I would have made that extruded part a seperate mesh so I could have used as many edges as I liked without messing up the flow, but the speaker itself on that part smoothes out, and wouldn't have been exactly correct, if I'd of just placed a new object on top, and slightly within the other mesh.

Like I said, its my first fully finished model (all the rest I've posted on this site haven't been finished 100% ), so any tips would be great

I hope you understand what I mean, heres the wire:

EDIT:

I'll try and fix a few things tonight, and will have the base finished, which I will then show.
I didn't just want to model the front or something, even though thats probably all you'll see in the scene, as, I feel its still incomplete, as it could also count as a portfolio piece.
So yeah, all models in the scene will be fully detailed ones.

I know there are issues with the model, and I bet if I did it all over, I'd do it alot quicker, and it'd probably end up being more accurate (I modelled by eye).

My mind has been all over the place though with 3D work, etc recently

Anyway, I'll try and get more done, but in the mean time, enjoy a a close up of the back of the model:

How do I do the render wireframe thing?

Thanks in advance.

nice detail, and I like the render too.

Thanx for the wire, always a good way to learn I think.

If you have Vray, use the VrayEdgesTex in the diffuse. Its as easy as that
I don't know with other renderers.

Heres the wireframe of the pod It has a Turbsmooth of 3 in the renders, which may be why it falls down with more than 2 on screen... I need more RAM apparently (I hav 2GB's)

Theres always something to remember if you want to curve an object that has lots of detail, and that is, that they have to have, or at least, try to have as many edges, with the same space between them as possible, otherwise you get all kinds of errors. I tried to do that, and I think I suceeded

Sorry for the large size:

Wow kage, those are brilliant! The wire is very clean, but may be a bit stuffed, I dunno, maybe it's just me but the edges look like they don't match up in seams.. aligning them may make it look shaper and cleaner on the render.. just my 2 cents though, and keep going, it's great!

Thanks

It'd be hard to fix the wires now, since the object is slightly curved. I added more edges in places to make sure the smoothing stayed smooth, and didn't become angular and strange, as we know happens if you try to bend an object that has more edges on one side than on another.

What would you suggest

Very cool Kage! I like details.. details... DETAILS!!

on a side-note, could you pop a render that's just a tad less saturated? I get all crazy-eyed and hyperactive when confronted with so much color!

Thanks

I'm trying to learn how to get a good product type shot out of it, and struggling.

Rendering isn't really my forte

I've tried all the techniques I can think of. I'm guessing I'm feeling a bit low, because renders look a little boring, and I think its because I haven't done what I usually do yet, which is pouring loads of work into materials and shaders.
I'll get there

I'm actually rendering a test shot with very simple materials of the right colour, to test how it looks without textures/complex shaders.

Well, if you were rendering in Mental Ray I could help you out there... but since it's vray, I can't

still, I'm sure there's plenty of people who can help you out with vray
