The Pirate Princess - Please Critique

"The Pirate Princess"

by me, CrucifixJEL

**********oh yea, this I also uploaded this artwork of mine in my DA page too.
==================

Purpose:
I wanted to digi-paint in a realistic style.

Question(s):
What do I need to work on more? Does the hair look natural? How is my lighting? How is my shading?

==================

This picture here was first drawn randomly in my head, therefore I didn't use any reference other than my knowledge of the face anatomy. I begin drawing on paper and pencil with the eyes and then, well it just started to create a face...so basically the eyes, to me tells a lot about the character once I started to connect lines together to form the face, hair, etc.

I digitally painted this in Photoshop CS3 using my ol-trusty Wacom Tablet. I basically created a color base on several layers, one for each parts like eyes, face, hair, etc. I did the same with the shading and highlights too. I use very low opacity on the eraser but high opacity on the brush.
=============

hrs to complete:

...on drawing: 45 mins
...on digi-paint: 3 hrs

Tools Used:
===========

1. Paper
2. Mechanical Pencil + eraser
3. scanner
4. Photoshop CS3
5. Wacom Tablet

Nice painting, you have done a fair amount of details/highlights (primarily the hair) however there hard to see because they are quite faint (this could just be my screen). The other thing i noticed is the headband, it looks a bit wide, but overall well done!

For a realistic result I would suggest eather the use of a model or the use of - how else - references (never get tired of advising this). To that, add your own imagination, skill and tricks to get the final result you desire. Right now you're in the stilized area, between cartoony and realistic, the image is flat since the shadows are really pale, there is no highlights or material shading simulation (skin, cloth). Its a good begining but a road like this has to start somewhere. Keep it going!

the only shadow is the one under her chin. Add shadows under her dreads, hair nose lips, and darken up the skin and give it more contrast. I can barely see the detail put into it. I too think the head band is a bit wide for her head. Good job so far and great detail on the hair, eyes, and lips. keep up the good work.
