Tutorial Assistance Thread

Forgive me if such a thread as this is frowned upon as I'm a nooblet.

I think it'd be great to have a thread where other more experienced members can help out by offering more detailed instructions to newbies following a tutorial, often tutorials leave out details which if you don't fully know what you're doing can leave you stuck.

I personally am having difficulty with the Joan of Arc tutorial, in fact in the first step. I found out how to set the references proper like in another tutorial, but then find myself not understanding the next step.

I know how to make the cube, apply "edit mesh" and collapse it. Yet I'm having trouble with the excluding to make up the shapes. I did it the best I could once, but then when I looked in my perspective viewport I notice I don't got a hunk of polygon, but a big mess of flat objects going all over the place.

So to start off this hopefully helpful thread: Can I please have assistance? It'd be greatly appreciated.

Could you post a screengrab of what your big mess of flat objects looks like? It's hard to visualise the way you described it.

Also, a pic of waht you're trying to achieve would be handy.

Well, I'd have to do it again as I've trashed most of the results. But generally more detail on this would be really helpful:

Quote:
For the beginning start in left viewport, extrude one face from the cube, like show on picture on the left. Repeat this process and adjust the vertexes.

Hello Buuhan1!
First of all: you don´t need to apply an edit mesh modifier. Just create your cube - rightclick on it and select - convert to editible poly. Then, from the sub-object menu - choose poly. Select the desired polygon and click on extrude. Changing to vertex, you can select then one by one and adjust them.
If you don´t know how to do this, i would say its to early for you to take on a project like Joan of arc. In this case i would recommend doing the basic tutorials that ship with max to get a better understanding of how the modeling tools work.
Have fun modeling.
Cheers

Joan of Arc Requires deep knowledge on polymodelling, as justus_jonas mentioned.... there are some basic polymodelling tutorials in max software, you can follow it before going to a more difficult and detailed one.

cheers

Are you referring to the short video tutorials which appear in the window when you first open 3Ds Max? I watched those sometime ago.

I generally understood what justus told me, I think I ultimately just got confused. We'll see, thanks for your assistance.

Hey Buuhan1!
I don´t know about the newer max-versions, but i onw max 7 and there ist a huge collection of tutorials covering the basics of nearly every aspect in max (text only). I had to install them seperately, so they would not pop up automatically after installing max. It started with the mouthwatering "animating a still-life" if i recall correctly.
Have fun.
Cheers
