Alpha bitmaps

Hello,

Was testing 2 of the trees from the "Total Textures Vol 10 - Trees And Plants CD" and ran into this issue. Can someone explain what I may be doing incorrectly. I'm using Maya 2009 and when I add the alpha bitmap for a tree to the transparency channel I still get some of the WHITE showing through the single polygon plane. Depending on the lighting angle you do see less of a white effect.

The image enclosed tells the story. What's my issue?

Thanks in advance,
Rich

Make sure your material isn't specular. It might have some shinyness that's causing the unwanted effect.

Re: Alpha Bitmaps - Much closer

Hi guys,

Thanks for such a quick reply guys. Looks like both of you are on the same page. I was using a Blinn which has spec by default so I changed them to lamberts. The results are better but if you check out the new pic you will see white highlights on the tree tops. Can this be improved upon without changing the stock alpha's on the CD. Or should I try graying out the alpha edges?

Again thanks for that quick reply guys,
Looks like this site has active members.

Actually, it could be due to the fact that the Diffuse maps have white around the trees. I find it a good habit to edit those images, and make it green around the trees, which should remove that effect.

Hi Free,

Looks like I'm stuck doing some real work in the real world. I thought the images on these DVD would have already been tweeked.

Thanks for your feedback,
Rich

Im not a max user but is there any pre-multiply or filter settings that get applied to textures? If so try to turn them off, also max could by default be applying a slight blur which may be messing up the alpha causing the white border.

Hi McKronic,

Actually I use Maya 2009. I just saw your demo reel and noticed that you also use maya. I'm using a lambert shader (no spec). Any other ideas on what settings to use in maya to get better results?
