# 85 Depth of Field
Speed Painting Challenge no. 85
Topic: Depth of Field Idea: This rime around, we play with our sense of sight. Create an image that showcases what Depth of Field means. It’s as simple as that. Deadline: 11:59 pm (GMT) Sunday December 21st (use the time zone thread to make sure your done in time) Prizes: (must be at least 6 entries) Winner gets to choose one of the following options: - 6-month subscription to the 2DCreative magazine - 6-month subscription to the 3DCreative magazine Rules: -Any medium is allowed, as long as it can be put into digital form - scanned, photographed, etc. - Since it's a speed painting, it should be finished in the smallest amount of time possible, but if you paint a whole day, you won't get disqualified . But for example, 4 days is too much - IF YOU PAINT MULTIPLE ENTRIES, YOU NEED TO STATE BEFORE THE DEADLINE WHICH ONE YOU LIKE THE BEST. IF NOT – I’LL DO IT FOR YOU - References can be used - 3D or photograph, BUT you can't paint over them. It has to be your own painting. - Custom brushes can be used, but to some extent - they can't be pre-made parts of the future painting, like a whole tree, brush, cloud, an explosion, lighting... you get the point. They can be - a couple of leaves, a couple of grass blades |

Never done one of these before, but I had a few free minutes. This is ~20 minutes. CS2 and a mouse.

My Try
I am only 15 and I've never painted in photoshop before, thought I'd give it a go and use it as a bit of practice. Took probably about an hour or less in photoshop.

This is a highly difficult topic.. as depth of field is a very technical thingy which happens only in photography (and hence inherited by 3D applications).
While technically the human eye is also a lens which focuses on distance the human brain works differently, I think - at least from my own personal experience. When one draws a scene from a real life object and one -as painter- tries to capture the scene with eyes one automatically refocuses on the part where the attention goes and practically we don't percipience that the whole rest of the picture in front of our eyes is blurred. I can't remember seeing any (classical) painting which incorporates a depth of field effect. Maybe I am wrong, though These days maybe some people paint basing on photo reference and hence recreated such effects in paintings - possible. Anyway... I gave it a try... first I had some fun with ArtRage and my Wacom (approx 1hour) for the background and then I messed it up in Photoshop (easier to blur there) for approx another hour. I keept the background w/o the DOF mess.. just in case. My original motivation was to play with the words and paint a field with (large) depth. ![]()

tjerkotten: Awesome! I love it. Great blend of DOF blurring and glare.

I wish I had something better for my first post but here we go. This took me about 3hrs, a bit longer than I was shooting for. Hope you like it.

btw., I see various externally with BBCode linked images here. This can cause various problems. Please upload your image to the forum instead. That way you ensure your image can always be viewed properly and without hassle.
When you make a post you see a "Manage Attachements" button. Click it and upload your image there, it then will show up as in my earlier post. @BiG ToE IMHO this should be added to the rules (likewise the Speed Modelling Challenge rules). And question: will there be a final entry thread for this challenge again? ![]()

Yeah tjerkotten's is pretty cool but my favorite at this point would have to be tokai's. It makes me feel like I am on vacation or something looking out into a field. |
