Vickers B-style WW1 tank
Hello folks!
For this project I'll be using Maya 2008 and Photoshop. I've been modeling a WW1 tank for an in-house friendly competition at work. The base model is a Vickers B tank, but due to lack of good blueprints, it's pretty much modeled by eye and not really super acurate, which doesn't bother me because in the end my goal is to have a realistic old tank and I don't need it to be historically acurate. That said, here are a couple of pics of my progress so far :

Really nice tank so far, its good to see someone attempting an older tank for a change. I like modeling tanks but it gets really difficult in the texturing stage due to all the detail and awkward shapes buts theres no point in modeling without any sort of a challenge
.At the moment no criticisms except maybe the tracks look a little too smoothed but then again i haven't looked at any reference images. |

Hi Brrr,
Yeah I'll be taking care of the texturing real soon, so I'll see how that goes but I'm pretty optimistic on that part since older tanks were much boxier than more recent ones, I imagine most of it should go fairly well. Thanks for the comment on the tracks, I'll keep that in mind. I've found a couple refs that I can post, I'll check to post more of my refs when I get home tonight. Please keep in mind that I took some artistic liberties on this, especially since from ref to ref some elements were different.

from the references i think your got it spot on, the tracks after looking at the ref images are OK in my opinion. You've even got the wrinkled metal look on the armour
every things perfect . So are you planning to have those desert colors? or a scheme more suited to the muddy European war zone? |

Karass : haha nooo I didn't count the number of links! I just made 1 link that would fit the spacing I gave my gears and spaced them enough for the spokes to work. I love your tanks man, you sure put a heck of a lot of details on them!
Brrr : Thanks The project I'm working on is part of a team effort with 2 other co-workers and although I did model this myself, I'll have to refer to them for the exact color sheme, but I'm pretty darn sure I can say it will not be desert and yes, probably more european. The entire project will consist of an abandoned and partially destroyed tank factory some 10-15 years before the image. Our deadline is Feb 2nd, so... much to do.. much to do! ![]() do stay tuned! ![]() *edit : added references and a note : I've tried to make the tank seem a bit bigger than the actual thing.. I hope I managed to subtly do it *

Ah so MrArmless is back with a new model, eh?
What happened to the room? ![]() Looking really nice so far. The attention to detail with the bumps etc on the surface is really good. Once this is in a scene with mats, it should look great!

haha, hi Kage :P
The room is temporarily on hold because of the contest, there is just too much to do for the contest project at the moment to work on both, I will be back on my other project in feb. The scene is being set up by 2 co-workers, I will be texturing the tank shortly and then we have alot of other stuff to model for the scene (boilers, pipes, tools, etc..) I should have some time to finish the modeling proper sometime this week-end and start the texturing. The plan is to have an high-res animation (about 10 secs camera pan)

Holiday break is over! time to get to it again.
darknight : it's comming! promise! Karras : thanks for the tip! I will fix this before it's over! I thought I'd post a little render my co-worker whipped out for our team. Please note that the structure and lighting was put together by my teamates and the lighting was a quick attemp to give us a basic idea of where it was going. It is not even close to final.

Hi guys,
sorry for the lack of updates but the last few weeks have been crazy for me and I spent my time working on the project more than posting.. Anyway, here is a quick update to the project. This is the straight render we've gotten for the scene. Please note that this image will be matte painted over and none of the passes we rendered are included in this image. You should be able to see a more complete image on next Monday. The original image is 3400 x 1912 so you can see alot more details, I will post a higher resolution image once it is done and I find a place to host it. As it is, I had to save it as a jpg at 45% quality. Here's hoping you will enjoy the image!
