Darkmonk - Medieval Set Extension
hi,
ok, this is my first ever matte painting and i intend on changing the image quite allot so i have removed everything apart from the gate and the attached walls, its a little messy but i intend on adding foliage and other objects in front of the wall so youll never notice it ![]() Clean plate- |

take care to that smooth edge of the gate. looking forward to see what you add
don't forget you can also extend it! and as you did it you have a lot of freedom to do so

hi all,
finally managed to get some time to put a concept together, i still think it needs something extra but im not sure what , i might play around slightly with the composition but i have to see what reference photos i can get as some of the ones i used in the concept are a little too low resolution. |

Looks nice.
The right side of the interior of the gate needs to come down further. The way it is now, it's almost as if the gate opening has been twisted out of shape. ![]() Otherwise, great concept. If you're looking for something more to add, maybe put some mountains in the distance behind the gate. |

good concept but pay attention to perspective - the gate has different one from the rest of the scene (and also some other elements)

perspective question?
hi all,
I have a question about matching the perspective in the scene to all the new alelments that i add, Is there any good preperations to take before starting a matte painting to help make sure all your elements share the correct perspective? I have a couple of guide lines already aligned to the gate and to locate a vanishing point for the scene but am interested in any hints and tips on what other people do, is it just a case of finding source material that fits ? becuase most of my images i am going to use are from the internet and sometimes it very hard to find an image that looks good and has the same perpective. Would love to hear how other people tackle this part of the task, PS. Great work and concepts by everyone so far, cant wait to see how they progress. |

Matte what?

Hi, I'm afraid there is no easy way to getting the right perspective. Especially since the plate itself is a bit distorted on the top. The best way to do it is look for images and spend time in looking for it. I usually give it a day or 2 getting as much as I can since at times the best images are those found by accident.
On the other hand you can force your references to that perspective by: 1. Creating a perspective line in a form of a grid or add more lines rather than using a couple. 2. Edit the image to fit the perspective, usually by parts, like edit the first column first then proceed to the next one at the same time placing them on different layers 3. Paint over patches of holes created by the forced perspective. Thats how I do it, and sadly like I said, there is no easy way of doing it. Hope this helps, keep up the good work man! ![]() |
