Japanese Pagoda
This project started out as a tutorial from Ryan Greene, making game environments in 3ds max. I finished the tutorial with a great result, but then i took a look at it and said that it simply would not do. I decided to completely redo the model, and actually model everything instead of just making the texture do all the work.
Here is the paogda done off of Ryan Greene's tutorial. ![]() And here is the current model i am working on. The redo.. ![]() I hope that this one will come out much better than the first, and i plan to make a scene around it as well, so i will be posting as i go along. if anyone would like to point anything out..feel free. Not bad of s start. Can you post a close-up of the roof please as it seems you have modeled it using tubes instead of proper tiles.
Keep going!

to tell the truth it actually is just tubes for the roof. as far as my reference picture goes, that is all that the roof is composed of on top.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...a_at_Epcot.jpg http://image53.webshots.com/453/0/60...6GOjSjC_fs.jpg i know that traditionally, those roofs are made out of "s" shaped tiles, but i am only going by what i see. if you can point out an error somewhere, or provide me with another reference picture which better shows the roof, it would be greatly appreciated. |

Looks good. That's a wicked hard style of roof to model, and you've got it down pretty well. You're fine using the tubes. I've got a ton of ref for pagoda's from when I was working on one awhile back and most of them use the roof like you have, the long tubes, with tiles in between.

![]() What I meant is the overall shape IS a tube, but it's made out of many tubes, one inside the other. See what I mean?

he he I pointed that out cos you said in your first post that you wanted to model everything rather than using textures.

haha. okay i see. you got me there. well guess i could give that a go. maybe after finishing the model, ill go back and redo the roof. what i am simply aiming for is to get more detail using geometry. in the first model, i think it has a total of somewhere between 800 and 900 polys. with this new one, im up to a few thousand right now.
but yeah, i will have updates later today. ![]() |

Update:
![]() i think because most of this is repetative from here out..i think im going to begin a slight unwrap and texture process..just so it will save me some time later. |

very nice modeling. From the reference pic it looks like the tubes need to be larger or closer together.

Some lighting and material fixes..as well as addition to the model. just need to complete one more level and the top roof and the model is finished.. at which point i plan to begin the scene around it.

Looks real good. About the roof tiles, yeah think you might as well have faked it with texture and normal map, since you can't really see it as it is. All depends on which angle and zoom you are going to view the model.
Are you going to add more windows to it?
