3ds max : avoiding moire patterns in materials

Hi there, I'm working on an animation at the moment that involves a teddybear character of gigantic proportions trashing a city. The problem im running into is the woolen type material he has applied to him is causing moire patterns to appear as he approaches the camera and generally moves about the scene.
I'm using mental ray as the renderer, but I'm more used to finalrender, and just wondered if there are some specific things to look at (both in mentalray and in general material theory) that might help me combat this annoying problem. Hopefully I will be able to use some sort of woolen texture, but I am willing to change it out to a different fabric material if there is absolutely no other way around the problem.

If you're not sure what I mean by moire pattern here is a wikipedia article on the subject...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moir%C3%A9_pattern

The image of the parrots feather is probably the best example of the phenomenon on there.

Thanks a lot for reading folks, and I look forward to your suggestions.

in all likelyhood it's down to your texture filtering - mess with any options you have available.

if that doesn't work I'd start looking at the antialiasing settings

Agreed; look at your sub-sampling. It's under the render settings panel (F10), under the renderer tab, in the upper left. Turn those to higher values and the problem should subside.

You can also visit my blog where I have an anti-aliasing primer that talks all about this kind of thing.
