Modeling / Rendering different softwares?

I have gotten stuck in a rut i feel. I have many years of mechanical engineering experience which has given me an exceptional sense of scale and detail..... But in 3d modeling real world scenes/objects it can slow me down because of attention to detail...... I have heard people say about 3d modeling needing to only "look" right because the final product is the importance.

My question comes in that because of engineering, i model in Autodesk inventor or Autocad most of the time and import to 3DSMax and tweak, finalize and render the scenes or objects. I just find it much faster to get what i want by modeling this way as opposed to modeling in 3DS.......

Is this a bad thing? Should i be working towards more modeling in 3DS?

Thanks
Ted

Hi,

I guess the priority for mechanical engineering and general 3D model is very different.

As a product designer, I use Pro-engineer which is similar to Autodesk Inventor. I also use stuffs like Blender which is similar to 3DSMax-type of program.

I find that both genre of software are very different. For me, I model accurately in MCAD software.. then import file to a 3DSMax-type software for rendering..

The rendering portion is just a small part of the design process.

Just a sharing.

I think what ever work flow works best for you and allows you to finish your projects on time and achieves the quality you want is the way to go. Some people use 4 or more different software packages, some people 1 or 2.
