Is there a way I can extrude an edge without the verts at its base splitting (wrt the number of lines connected to the verts)?
I know Maya, Blender, and other packages do this but I really like using max and it would just be perfect if I could eliminate that one problem!!!

don't you just put the outline to '0'?

That will make it LOOK like there aren't any extra verts. They are there though. So when you go to move that vert later on, or try to weld to it you realize it's two verts and you have to do all this extra welding work (which is annoying).

Well, I think it's your only option, since a polygon always needs to be two sided, for it to show up two sided. you could delete one side, then weld. I believe that works..?

Ok, I'm not explaining this correctly. Let me show you what I'm talking about.
Attach are the initial state, the true extruded state (notice the triangles) and the type of extrusion I want (no triangles, one vert, nothing but an extruded edge). This **** is tragic and it annoys me to no end.

You select the edge you want to extrude, and then drag it outward, while holding shift.

Yeah, you should only use shift+drag on (edges of) planes. Extrude is move suited for polys.

Thank you both, this is simply the most ground breaking thing for me. Now I can finally work at a good pace!

afaik Max is the only major package to have this feature.
the fact the poly modelling tools in Max are light years ahead of everything else is the only thing stopping me from shifting over to Maya. Max is getting more unstable and bloated with every release and I'm positively dreading the mess they'll make of the polyboost integration in 2010. I don't like polyboost so I really hope they leave the old tools in place. edit: apologies for the rant. |

Poopie: I like the polyboost stuff. I tried the demo of it and it was pretty slick (especially for unwrapping UV's) But you're right about Max being bloated. Autodesk is trying way to hard to put everything they can into one package and really forgetting what makes Max good in the first place.
