Generally you want to do bump maps in greyscale, (I don't know of any reason to do otherwise but maybe someone else does,) so a good starting point might be to get a good quality photo of a brick wall & convert it to greyscale. Now you need to figure out which bits might need tweaking - white is high & black is low usually so the lighter the colour, the higher bump it will produce. This might be a problem if the mortar between the bricks is light in the colour version but is recessed into the wall. I see a lot of wall renders where the mortar juts out, which can sometimes happen but usually it creates a concave recess. There are a number of things you can do to rectify it - use the burn tool (I rarely go above 20% maximum & use as big a brush as you can get away with.) or select all the mortar (how you do that is up to you - magic wand might work, or else lasso, or paths maybe) & use levels etc.
Levels is a useful tool for helping to get the bump (or specular) map you want & should be experimented with. |
