i have a cube which i want to change from opauque to transparent. I have used a gradient ramp in the opacity slider

Problem is the traveling a different direction of the gradient is sides of the cube, are different to the top

Put a UVW modifier to the box. Make sure it's set to planar (which is default), and rotate the gizmo of the UWV modifier whatever you want.

You can also use slice modifier if you just want your object to dissapear from one side to another (without falloff)
No need to bother with materials.
