HDR Reflections

3DS Max

I added some HDR reflections to my model but they are coming out very strong - how can I tone them down?

Setup: I used the environment switcher material in the background slot. In the material dialog I added a chrome ball to the reflections and added my HDR. For the area light I told it to use the environment.

I notice I have two places where the multiplier value exists - one in the material and one in the area light. Can I tone down the material without affecting the light multiplier? Or if I tone down the HDR material multiplier will it affect the output of the light? Not sure how these two are related.

Though the HDR reflections are strong where the key light hits the tower the reflections are even stronger where the area light has the biggest impact making the whole thing look darker than it is.

Thanks.
