Really nice designs and paints andrea. Your understanding of colour and environment is very good. Just curious as to how you achieved the rock texture in your second pass, as im having trouble painting that in mine.

Wow, that's looking good already! Awesome how you textured those rocks, looks very convincing, like Kobes I'm having a very hard time making that look good in mine. Great work, looking forward to see more.

About how I achieved the texture it was a combination of multiple techniques. I built a simple 3D model and applied a rock texture (from cgtextures) to it. I also experimented with displacement and bump. However, these results were not satisfying and it would take me too long to make them look good. So I applied some areas of that render over the concept and painted in the rest. I had to be careful to follow the perspective. However, most of the work was done with parts of photos applied over the concept, Brightness/Contrast (in Legacy mode), Hue/Saturation, erase parts and then paint in the rest to blend it. Basically that is the technique. There is a very good matte painting tutorial from Gnomon called "Camera Projection Techniques in Maya" and I learned a lot from that.
Here is another update. Still a lot of work to do. |

Ah, thank you for the explanation, I see you use the same provider for textures as I do, great site isn't it?
![]() I'm struggling with wrapping textures around my rocks in PS though, I'll get there, but I doubt if it's one of the easiest ways to do it. Looks awesome! (Again )Last edited by snwbrdr; 17-11-2009 at 08:07 PM.. |

This is coming along really nice. Right now the water seems to be splitting the composition but I am sure you have something in mind

Interesting technique, I like the concept and It's original, now the big work will be the entrance. Keep it up!

Thanks...I'll see what I can do about the splitting of the image and the "missing element".
A crop of the area I've been working on. Still a lot of painting to do. |

Actually, most of the pictures I'm using came from photos I took in the Gragante del Cares in the Picos de Europa in Spain...beautiful location.
