Old-School Starcraft Marine
I've lurked around here a bit before, and I've always been intimidated by the incredible quality of the models around here, but, well, here goes. (takes breath)
Couple hours of work so far, still very WIP. Made in 3ds Max 2008. More smoothing to come later. In contrast to SgtHK and Freespace's excellent marines, I'm going for a bit more of a classic look. Last edited by M0H_Robert; 18-12-2009 at 08:43 PM.. |

Hey man,
Welcome to Threedy! That's a good start, you've got a clean mesh. Though what I see that's a bit off-design are the spotlights. They should come out of there in front of the chest plate like here: http://www.starcraft2video.com/2007/...oy-collection/ http://starcraft2.strategyinformer.c...starcraft1.jpg Looking forward to more.

You're right, and thanks for the pictures of that model.
![]() Day 4: It's rather bulkier than the original models. Last edited by M0H_Robert; 20-11-2009 at 06:10 AM.. |

Not much progress. Redone chest and shoulders are the highlight. The gun is very rough; mostly just for shape/proportions. Probably won't finish this until after college apps/concerts/finals/etc.

Haven't really updated this, haven't really had much time. Here's a texture test though; planning on having fun with all the random stuff that Terrans paint on their armor.
Advice encouraged. ![]() |

@Freespace, will do, but I also think I'm gonna make it like in the game instead of in the cinematics. In the cinematics, each marine had a different armor color and colorscheme, but mine I think will all have the same color as they're all in the same faction, and I'll just have them have different designs painted on.
Here's some more work: |

The modeling part is mostly done... Parts are hidden in both pictures (don't pay attention to the skinniness of the middle picture or the missing hoses, hands, etc)...
Anyway, I've got a question: how do you texture things like flashlights and floodlights? I've attached a picture of freespace's marine which has the kind of look I'd like to go for with the lights, but I don't really know how to get it. :/ Last edited by M0H_Robert; 21-12-2009 at 11:46 PM.. |

Hey Robert!
For the floodlights on my marine, I used two Gradient Maps. One is a very tiled gradient ramp for the vertical lines, and mixed on top of that ( you can use Composite, RGB Multiply or Mix ) is another gradient map set to radial.

gj
just an idea, if we combined all the star craft looking models - from characters to weaponry ships etc, we could make either a cool looking animation - how a old school marine progressed to a marine rank II (not good with the lingo so pardon my french) or some really awesome composite with everything peeps made, so far i can recall 3 marines 1 ship... perhaps someone can dig up more similar theme models ![]() |
