Deep Paint 3D and Lightwave 7.0 problems...

I am using Deep Paint 3D for the first time to texture a character model I have created. I am having problems paiting on the character though. I can load the model just fine but when I go to paint on it is makes a dotted line like a marquee selection in photoshop and a message box appears saying "you need to add a bitmap to your material...go to the layers tab in the command panel to do this". I know where the layers tab is but see no such option. I am able to paint a layer (flood paint) with one color but can not use the freehand brush tool. I searched through the tutorial and all but did not really find anything to help me. This may be a really simple problem and I apologize if it is, I am just new to Deep Paint at the moment. Thanks for any help you can provide!
