A bit of guidance and advice.
Let me quickly run down my situation.
I got started in computer work with the unreal engine 3 a few years ago. I used that mainly and practised with it. There was still something missing however. I also, during my time with UE3 used xsi to import some basic models and learn ins and outs. I was looking for a bit of guidance on one of my (terrible) models and Raul gave me some advice...i say some...i mean a lot.Thats how i found this place and what i really wanted to do. Now, this was only around Xmas 09 sp i havent been doing this very long, but i love doing it and im desperately wanting to improve as id love to do this professionally (im 16, so i reckon i have some time to practice) Now id like to ask the best way to improve. Ive so far worked on various pieces and not really finished one, either because i hated it or i was told to stop working on it. Id just like some advice on various things i can do to improve. Ive gathered some things like anatomy books, practicing and tutorials. I guess i just want advice as i feel a little lost. for ex what should my next step be how can i improve my anatomy skills I know ive gathered advice from my other threads aswell. But hopefully by making this thread specifically for that purpose my next step will become clearer. I want to do this more than anything at the moment and i am constantly practicing, and i would be eternally greatful for some help and guidance because as i mentioned before, i feel lost. Thank you -Bryan i would like to thank Raul for helping me find my feet here. Thanks man.

I do practice. A LOT.
But its finding something I can model thats going to keep me intrigued and that I can actually model that can be a problem.

its pretty much just all practice and learning.... i took a very long time to learn. i've been doing this for 7 years now (on and off) doing tutorials will help a lot. it's mostly learning how edges flow and how smoothing affects those edges if you're talking about modeling. you also will get an eye for it as you keep going. always look at the professionals work and compare it to your own. do a lot of experimentation. i almost went to school doing this (did 1 semester and quit) because you have to deal with all the crap like cutting out paper and doing color theory, etc. i would suggest one of the very specialized schools like gnomon or something...
anyways, never be happy with your work, and keep going! finishing projects will probably help a lot too. i've never really actually finished anything... |

Don't put too difficult project from start. Keep things small, try to approach everything in minimalistic ways. Don't think of making huge scenes with tons of complicated objects and tons of ideas. Instead try to capture the same ideas with few simple objects. This way you will have easy-to-finish project which will make you feel good and also help you to grow up as a artist.
So my overall advice for beginning is - keep things small, doable for you. Learn to finish things, build self-confidence and keep moving to upper ladders. But also, don't be scared of experimenting, it's neccessary to find out what suits you best. Good luck and keep us updated with your progress!

i was thinking of entering next months smc, i had an idea for this months one today and i started on iy but i dont think ill get it finished in time.
I was thinking that i could do projects for it, something that i actually finish and the competition would be a great inspiration and motivator. And hopefully i would work my knowledge from this into other aspects and eventually produce some pretty cool stuff. What do y'all think of that idea?
