All I can think of is an apple or a coke bottle... does that say something about me?

This does sound like a really open good challenge. I was going to enter a speed modelling challenge first to get used to the system. But i am going to attempt this challenge even though i will have no chance compared to the matte painters etc. I just hope the judging is fair and i end up with a decent image for my standard!

I second JAPO it will be great if we stuck with rules, what happen if someone get hurt by your theme, I personally think that should not happen on art forums, there are many ideas which you can do on fantasy/Sci-fi.
Its best to stays away from existing religion.

I'm a bit disappointed about the extra rule tbh.
Art has had religious themes since people first took a burnt twig to a cave wall - at the risk of being inflammatory (but in the spirit of reasoned debate) I feel that if you're that touchy about your religion, perhaps you ought to reconsider your faith? that said, I understand 3DT's position with regards to not angering people so I'll just keep quiet from now on I think this is an excellent brief and look forward to seeing something like this happen regularly. |

Anyway I don’t want to battle debates with you Poopipe because you are a very old and senior artist on this forum and I am just a learner, I join this forum to get better at art. I started art because to me ART bring joy, calmness, adventure, happiness and sometime horror in from of Movies, games and painting. But I know some people make Art as a weapon to hurt other feeling to me it’s not right but then again that’s my 50 cents. Regards

Instead of chopping off the head. Wouldn't it be better to just adjust the the rule and weed out any material which might promote a negative stereotype or something which would blatantly offend someone? TBH There is no such thing as ORIGINAL. Everything is taken and built upon something else. The mythological and fantasy based art will have references and roots from previous cultures and religions. Lastly, I think it would be very DIFFICULT to create something offensive being the theme of this challenge is "GIFT" to the gods. It is a positive theme with a neutral idea and if anyone turns it into something racist and offensive would clearly stand out! Last edited by bakuryu06; 04-03-2010 at 09:40 PM.. |

This is a pretty touchy deal, no matter how you put it, someone might get offended by the outcome of this competition whether the "New rule" exists or doesn't. Bottom line is this is a highly diverse forum in all aspects due to having people from all around the world which of course are gonna have a different way of accepting or interpreting a piece of art work.
Should we accept offensive entries? "absolutely not", but who's to say what's wrong and what's right when it comes to ones interpretation of what we understand as religion (besides the obvious; when so many of them exist. Like I said you're never gonna get it right when it comes to these topics, sadly there's never neutral ground here. I would simply do this, post my work and let everybody else have their own stab at the topic. |

The rules are set, please no more discussions on changing them, or your opinions on why they aren't suitable, lets just get on and make some great sci-fi/fantasy/mythological etc images. If anyone doesnt want to this or is unhappy with this competition please wait until next month when we will launch a new topic.
We have a ton of work on at the moment guys so, so please help out wherever you can. Many thanks Tom |
