The Lost Jungle - Speed Modelling - Forgotten Retreat

Welcome to the fifth MONTHLY CHALLENGE which are spread across the entire forum. This section is the Speed Modelling Section.

When Naming Your Thread, please do so as the following SMC#05 - Lost Jungle - Forgotten Retreat - Your Name.

The Lost Jungle Challenge

Speed Modelling Monthly Challenges #05 - Forgotten Retreat.

Challenge Introduction: Your part of a team of scientists and missionaries assigned with the documentation of new species of mammals and birds, you set course for the tropics, but after a rather violent storm your boat capsized and you and your team awake to stumble's upon a lost island. This island isn't on any map, this island is unlike any location seen before.

Challenge Brief - Model a lost or undiscovered retreat hidden in the jungle depths. this challenge falls under 4 possible categories:

1). Tree House
2). Above Ground/Underground Bunker
3). Underwater Oasis
4). Desolate Cave/Dwelling

For inspiration think of Jurassic Park, Lost, King Kong.
You can go for any civilization that existed or a hybrid/original culture of your own. The retreats could have certain technology left behind alongside any other clues as to why the jungle is now deserted. Let your imagination roam free.

Time Limit: 240 Mins, multiple entries are allowed at the WIP stage, but you can only submit one into the final judging.

Deadline: Friday 11:59 pm (GMT) April 30th

Submission Guidelines

1x Wireframe of the model. Feel free to post multiple wireframe shots both screen grabbed and cell rendered, the more angles and good clear wireframes the better.

1x Clay render, a detailed clay render of the model created, again with as many angled shots as you like or one big render of the model/scene.

Optional - Beauty Render, this is not compulsory but if you feel you'd create a beauty render to help illustrate your scene then please do so.

All images should be no larger than 1024x1280 in a portrait or landscape format. All images must be at least larger than 800x600 or bigger to qualify. All images must be uploaded to the threedy severs via the attachment button in the advanced section of the thread page.

Time spent on the scene does not include texturing, lighting or rendering.

State your software of choice, and time spent somewhere on your entry. Any additional details such as lighting and texturing and rendering times are optional.
It is permissible to use different software to light and render your model if you so wish.

Competition Restrictions:

Your entry must be specifically created for this challenge. Do not use any pieces from previous personal works. We are relying on your honesty here.

Additional Information:

As always time spent should be on modelling only and judging will be based solely on modelling alone, texturing and beauty renders are encouraged to help depict your model or scene better, but will not be taken into account when judged.

Hehe peter Jackson always mixed unmixable. Like.. zombies and lawnmowers

TNT... I will not compete with you on Dharma, so be my guest . I have 2 concepts in my head already, with one getting preference. I have also ideas that would make interesting "abandoned retreats" but dont feature jungle. Such as... Korriban - planet of the Sith, or Event Horizon

Remember there's so many variations you could go with this one, especially if you aren't keen on modelling the jungle parts, that's why you could have an underwater retreat or in a cave or even a tree house, anyone remember the priests treehouse in the Broken Sword games?
where nico got poisened and George had to find a root to treat her.

There's so much potential for this one, so stop reading this and go start sketching/modelling

Kind Regards

CG.

hi everyone ... i am a new member here and i think i will join in in this competition.. i just had a question.. what is the criteria for judging this one... is speed the major element here or actual quality... what i mean to say is should i try to model what i want as fast as i can , or should i try to make use of the whole 240 minutes ? .... i hope i made myself clear with that question

Hi a7madfat7y use the time frame as best as you can, you can choose to model as quickly as your desire.... BUT.....only if you are happy with doing that, if not just model what you can in the 240 minutes, don't be afraid if you've not finished either it's fundamentally all about learning here just as much as taking part. Regarding the judging process, your models or scenes are judged solely on the modelling alone....nothing more....nothing less, you are allowed to create beauty renders if you wish but they are optional if you wished to illustrate your model(s) scene better. The quality of your modelling will depend on the scene you create.....for instance if you are new to modelling or still a beginner set yourself a smaller scale scene with a closeup camera and model what you can to fill the scene up... it's all about what you are comfortable with. In time your modelling will get better and indeed faster. I myself started participating in the speed modelling challenges 4 years ago and could barely model anything resemling the subject matter in the time allowed. But after practicing and practising and planning and planning I slowly got better and better. The best thing in your favours before you actually start modelling is to pratice and plan, draw out your concept(s) have a few test runs at modelling certain elements and see how long it takes you and then start from scratch and beat that time etc. Also know your toolset and more importantly know your shortcuts.... these things are invaluable and can save you so much time, especially utilise things like symmetry, duplicates, instances etc they will help too.

Best of luck with your entry and i'm looking forward to seeing your thread very soon
