GFaught - Lost Jungle
I am doing a Mayan temple left in the jungle for centuries.
![]() Here is my very quick, very rough sketch of what I am thinking. I was just trying to find a composition that I like before I add to much detail. I am fairly happy with the layout, so I will proceed with this and see how it goes. More updates to follow soon.

![]() A bit of an update. I have been adding some photo reference and painting atop of it to fill in holes. I think I am going in the right direction although I think I may have gotten a little carried away on this part. Comments and critiques always welcome.

Here is one more quick update.
I added some hanging vines as well as some of the vegetation in the foreground. Still much to be done before the deadline. ![]()

Update.
Here are my reference photos. ![]() And after a very late night I think that I am about finished. I got into a pretty good painting groove yesterday and lost track of time. I probably should have posted another update in here somewhere. C&C always welcome. ![]() Thanks everyone for the words of encouragement, it is always helpful. I also have a question for everyone, if I were to put this on a matte painting demo reel is it a better idea to take the time and make it more of a completed shot? What I mean is would it be better, for example, to comp some people going up to the temple in a canoe or something and do a slight 2.5d push. or would it be better to just leave this as is as just the painting and do a quick breakdown of the layers?

Nice final.
As for your question: I think it depends on what kind of job you're aiming for. If it's a visual effects and animation type of thing you want to do it's always good to get some motion in there. And of course there's the question if you are willing to take the extra effort and map all the layers (or a couple of layer groups) on geometry. With the background objects it might be less difficult, but with the fern in the foreground for example you have to be more careful that it doesn't look flat and cheap in the end, when there is not enough motion parallax. Cheers ![]() |
