Youtube vs Vimeo difference?

Well, I recently uploaded my video to Youtube, and I was really disappointed of the quality of the video on how it appeared on the website. My final animation was rendered at 1280 * 720, so Youtube did recognize it as HD. But when viewing the HD version of the video fullscreen I noticed the quality wasn't the same as the file on my harddisk.

So I uploaded the video to Vimeo, and viewing the HD version of the video fullschreen it looks much better, well, at least a lot better than the youtube version.

So, seems like youtube compresses the uploaded video?

For me, it looks like Vimeo is the better choice. I know there should be more video websites out there, but I don't know any other besides these two. Or is there a special way or format to use when uploading to youtube?

Video has been rendered in 1280 * 720, as a quicktime mov with h.264 compression.

I have to say. I use youtube more but I actually prefer vimeo. Its just a nicer website to visit, quite apart from the fact that the quality is drastically better.

I am with Krallis here, I use YT more bit I like Vimeo better. YouTube was good until Google bought them and now they have just become corrupted *******s. I have never had so much problems with any other video hosting site as with YouTube.

I think you tube not only re-compress whole video, but they are putting brighness-contrast filter on it, so video always looks much darker on some places.

Vimeo is great!
