Hello,

it's time for me to jump in. After few ideas I am finally settled with this one. I want to do R2-D2 Steampunk style. Going for low-poly version with 2048x2048 maps and 10-12k tris.

Here is the start on hi-poly.

Got eight day to finish, so I will try to be quick

Changed the legs (arms?), added details... Tommorow I have day off, so I am going to finish the hi-poly and do low-poly

Did low-poly version with 9,759 tris, which is good - I wanted to squeeze it below 10k. Going to unwrap and use 2048x2048 maps

Thanks dudes, glad to hear, hopefully I will be able to finish it in time. I just need to pack the UVs right now and I can bake normals/AO and texture.

And the reason why I want it low-poly is - I low doing low-poly, plus I want to use it for my low-poly folio. Imho this will be good piece to show up :-)

Update. After struggling with Unwrapping Projecting and rendering I finally got something that can be called AO and NM maps. Of course, it needs a lot of cleaning up, but pretty satisfied with it. Now, texturing, only less than five days to go

I dig it, the norms are looking good. Should be a easy fix to paint out the 'artifact waves' in PS. Keep cracking away at it, hope to see him all textured up.

You know, now that I saw this I feel like that's the way R2D2 was always meant to be. It never occurred to me how steampunkey he was...very fitting. I like it.

Here is another update - finished blocking out the colours and fixed major problems (like wavy artifacts and so on). Now for more serious business - giving it metallic look and dirtying it up

The grey area on the hull is going to be filled with texture of wood from photos, so I left it out. Also, the back isn't very perfect and maybe I will leave it as it is, because of the lack of time... We will see. The final shot will be from side/front view, so it's ok

Thanks. I am going to render it within some real-time engine - most probably Xoliul shader or Marmoset toolbag. I shall see what gives me better result.

It's been a while since I used VRay and I don¨t want to experiment with it - it takes quite a time to set everything up, plus test renders... These real-time engines are just what I need. Of course there will be some postproduction for the final image - I am planning to do some little presentation
