some answers

you need texporter. A uvw file is only openable in max so that if you want to collapse or export or something you can get all that data back through the .uvw file. [Correct me if i'm wrong] what you need to do to get the uvw map into photoshop is get texporter select the object and save the "render" that pops up. I don't exactly know where you can get texporter, but you should be able to find it on google or something.

there's a file called texporter3.dlu. just put that in your max plugin directory (for example - c:\3dmax3\plugins\)
and start up max - it'll load by itself.
than u go to the utilities tab (that's the right one, looks like a hammer) and click on more. select Texporter - and you're ready to go.

what u do is select an object (make a cylinder, so u can learn from that) and give it a UVW map - cylindrical. then go to texporter, and choose the size of your image - click on select object, select your object and save the image that appears.
then u can take that image into photoshop, and use it as a reference to your object in max.

ok?
