[3dsMax] Render with Transparent Background?

Hey All, here's a tricky one for you.

For some reason, I can't remember how to render with a transparent background in 3dsMax via mental ray. Does anyone know how to do this?

Remember that transparent backgrounds aren't just the file format you save to. Consider the image below where I've rendered a cube with anti-aliased edges and DoF against a magenta background. The magenta background is factored into the pixel color before the alpha is applied. Is there a way to isolate the object entirely away from the Background Color?

There's a setting called 'Use Environment Alpha', you MUST have your environment set to black 0,0,0 and when you save, use a .tga with pre-multiplied off.

Is it black? I thought it was white.

This is a normal problem that you have to get around using your own ingenuity. You will always get the problem you are experiencing, when it comes to rendering out passes that use antialiasing, and compositing them in Photoshop. I suggest the following.

- Larger renders, are easier to adjust, because you basically have more pixels to work with when removing the anti aliasing.

- Try and render onto a background as close to the one you are going to be layering onto.

- Adjust the alpha in photoshop. A simple way to do this is to select the alpha mask of your image, and adjust the levels.

Saying all this, I am essentially a game artist, and most of my experience revolves around creating assets, not creating stills or cinematics. I'm sure an experience VFX artist will probably give you a more concise answer.

Sorry Deadly, same problem. This controls the alpha of the background, but the alpha multiplication still occurs after the image is rendered. Consider the attached .png where you can see that the teal cube fades to black as it fades to transparent. We need the color to remain the same and only the transparency to change via anti-aliasing.

That makes sense, Prime. I think it's a bummer that we don't have this option in 3dsMax though. I'll make a post on my blog about it and see if anyone comments one way or the other.

WELL INDEED!

You answered your own question. Save the file out as a .png, I tried it and got the results I think you are after.

is it impossible to render an object and then using a simple alpha you get by saving in *.tiff with alpha channel?

Or do you have something behind the object so that's not an option?
