Noob Help. Scene file opens empty???

Hi Noob here.

Been given some .max files. which have drawings in. When i open them there is nothing on the screen just blank pages.

I am using the latest version so shouldnt be that i think. Any ideas. Everything else seems to work i think.

Thanks for the help

So i have uploaded one of the files i am trying to open to megaupload. If you want to download and see if you can open it that would be great. If you open it succesfully and can see the cad drawing please tell me how you did it. If you don't see anything please tell me as well. ( by all means scan for virus, but it is just a .max file) please add the Ws to the link.

can't watch the video.

but try these options

Shift + S (Hide/ unide all spline objects)
Right click anywhere in a viewport -> Unhide all
Go to your layers ( Top toobar, kind of to the right, the icon is three sheets stacked on top of eachother) and see if any layers are hidden. if so, click the lightbulb to unhide the layer
Open the file in wordpad to see if there is any data in the file at all.

Hope one of these helps.

Unhappy Thanks, but "seems" like nothing is there.

Shift+S didnt help neither did unhide. I looked in layers and tried select by name thinking it might be off screen but there were no names, and nothing in the layers apart from default sheet.

I checked in wordpad and there is definately data in the files. And they are all the right sort of size of mb.

I think it might be a version compatability thing but i don't know. I am running 2011 version.

anyone else got some ideas. Thx

Try uploading the file to a different host for someone to look at for you.
The link you gave above is trying to convert it to a video to play and I can't see an option to download it.

Well.
It opens fine for me.
The file is from an older version of Max as there is an 'obsolete data' warning when opening it.
I can't see any drawing in the file though only a pole like object as shown in the render below.

I have saved it as max 2011 file at the following link.
http://www.easy-share.com/1914224493...M)_ver2011.max
Hopefully it should work for you now.

Sorry not to reply sooner, been away for a couple of days.
Post the files somewhere and leave a link and I'll convert them for you.

I opened it with 3ds max 2011, the same as you are using.
But I had no problems opening it.

This might sound stupid but...

How do I open a file?

Where do i look for the image/s?

(I have just been opening them like you would any file by double clicking, also by going file>open.)

The file seems to open ok but then the four viewing panels don't appear to have anything in them even when looking around in the 3d space.

Any ideas?

is there a scale warning? perhaps the file scale is too small, or way to big, so you donīt see anything because its out of your default view. open the scene, right - unhide all. then press h - there should be the names of some objects (make sure that you clicked everything to be visible) if there is nothing in, your max installation is screwed.
