The Brief and General Discussion
Deadline extension - Monday 18th April 12.00 midday GMT
![]() Challenge Brief You're invited to create a mock movie poster for a film entitled 'Atomhawk'. The film can be any genre (except pornographic), set in any time period and location. The finished artwork should adhere to the standard movie poster ratio of 27w 40h. Actual dimensions are up to you, but please make it large enough to judge! Aim for over 1280 pixels as the winning entries may be printed. Feel free to include some typography as well, such as the title, tagline, you can even put in a billing block if you want. Above all, be creative! Things to think about: Your artwork will be better if you put some thought into the plot of the movie you're portraying and also the style of the artwork and the composition of the poster. Most movie posters try to encapsulate what the general theme and story of the film is. • Think about the style of the poster, is it a classic character/action montage (Indianna Jones, Star Wars) or is it to be a more contemporary approach featuring more of a key moment in the film, for example the posters from 300, Gladiator etc. • Who are the stars of the film? What kind of costumes do they wear? • Where is the film set? What kind of atmosphere would the film have? • What role does the word Atomhawk play in the film? Is it a character? An organisation? A weapon...or something else? The prize list We’ve got a 2D category and a 3D category, both with exceptional prize lists which includes the following: 2D Category • 1st place – Wacom Intuos4 L, £100* 3DTotal shop voucher, a copy of The Art of Atomhawk Design: Volume 1, and an Atomhawk t-shirt. • 2nd place – Wacom Intuos4 Wireless, a copy of The Art of Atomhawk Design: Volume 1, and an Atomhawk t-shirt. • 3rd place – Wacom Intuos4 M, a copy of The Art of Atomhawk Design: Volume 1, and an Atomhawk t-shirt. 3D Category • 1st place – Wacom Intuos4 L, £100* 3DTotal shop voucher, a copy of The Art of Atomhawk Design: Volume 1, and an Atomhawk t-shirt. (* to include shipping). Challenge rules: 1. All artwork must be your own original designs. Where applicable, fonts must be credited to their creators. 2. All artwork must be created specifically for this project, Pre-made photo clip art is not allowed. 3. Individual entries only, no team-work. 4. At least 1 additional image must also be submitted showing the workings of your image, for example, a wire frame, steps of a 2d painting, or the photos of a matte painting. You must try to make it clear to the judges how your image was created. 5. All entries must be submitted to the final entries thread by Midnight GMT Friday April 15th 2011. 6. Initial judging will be carried out by 3DTotal staff and moderators to select the best 10 for each category. At this point Atomhawk will come on board to select the prize winners for each category. 7. The winners will be notified by email, and the results published shortly after. Submitting your artwork: Please make your own wip thread in this forum and use the naming convention "ATOMHAWK – 2D or 3D (delete as appropriate to show which category you’re entering) - YOUR IMAGE TITLE - YOUR FORUM NAME"

And there she goes!
How much are you allowed to combine 2d and 3d as this is a movie poster where it might thus be a huge amount of work to make it all into a 3d scene...?

I Just wanted to say sorry about the clash with the upcoming DW5 but we are locked in on the dates with our comp and the sponsors so we have to launch now. Ours is only for 1 month and differs somewhat so hopefully there will be room for everyone and both comps to run along side each other, I have spoken with BigToe and Fred and all is cool.

Good question! if you are entering 3d at least 50% should be 3d, and the main elements (like a character for example should be 3d) but it's cool with lesser elements and the BG being 2d.

Why the hell not, I'm in. DW5 ain't never gonna happen for real, plus Atomhawk is one of my mini heroes... right before Grant but after the guy in that can stuff himself into a 2x2 box, that guy is seriously cool.
I'm thinking Superhero-Western with a Operatic Kung Fu vibe, sort of a Blazing Saddles meats Superman... or maybe I should thing about this some more.
