well there's a few ways to approach this
if you want a burnt rope left over after the spark goes over it then you can use an animated texture along with some modifier that distorts the geometry in its wake. you can use a particle system that travels the length of the rope to simulate the spark if you're looking for something where what's burnt turns into cinder and ash and falls down, then you can create something like a loft, and animated it shrinking. as its shrinking use an animated texture and perhaps noise to simulate the tip where its burning. finally use 2-3 particle systems, maybe one to simulate the sparks and 1-2 to simulate the ash particles, bind them to gravity and have them fall on something like a deflector as the floor. this can get pretty complicated, so i'd recommend reading up on these topics in max help - particle systems - space warp binding - lofts - procedural textures and animating them - deflectors good luck -k |

I got this one too, but i cant twist it more, and, omg its 40,000+ polygons!!, my pc almost froze!
I made this one this way: 1 cylinder of 1 radius, height=500, height segments=200 (max), textured and bumped cloned 4 of it, so now i have 5, put it togheter, union with boolean, adjust the pivot and twist 2k angle, converted to editable mesh, cloned 2 of it, so now i have 3, put it togheter, union with booleand, adjust pivot and twist again....

I know pretty much nothing about modelling e.t.c so i cant really offer any advice, except to say i think that #1 looks the best.
