SMC #23 "What's The Frequency?" - Radios
![]() The Challenge Rules 1). Each challenge we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modeling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief can be removed and the poster disqualified. 2). You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified. 3). Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like and must include a clear and easy to see wireframe of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Wire renders/ Cell Shaded or Screengrab wireframes are acceptable. Any wireframes we cannot see correctly will be disqualified. The key is for us to be able to see the wireframes clearly to ascertain how you modelled the subject matter. 4). You MUST include the following details with each submission: A). Software used B). Time spent creating the model. C). A Clay Render of your models. Any further information is voluntary but posts not containing the required information can be removed and the poster disqualified. 5). Post TWO images per entry which must be no larger than 1280x1024 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 195k. 1 image for your wireframes and 1 for your clay combined with a optional beauty render. These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page. Do not link to external images files. Images larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials) will be removed and the poster disqualified. 6). The creation of displacement maps, normal maps and any splines drawn out in an external program other than your modeling software are to be included in your modeling time. 7). Time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the allocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post it as long as it's recognizable. 8). Posting the same entry twice in a challenge is considered to be double posting and will result in a disqualification. When asked to fix a previous post due to DQ or any other reason, you must fix the first post, or delete it altogether and create a new one. 9). The Winner must email jo@3dtotal.com to claim their prize. 10). Only 1st place & 2nd place (i.e. the runner up) can claim a prize. These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions! Subject: Radios. Deadline - 10:00PM GMT Friday 2nd September 2011 Description: Radio is the transmission of signals through free space by modulation of electromagnetic waves with frequencies below those of visible light. The meaning and usage of the word "radio" has developed in parallel with developments within the field of communications and can be seen to have three distinct phases: electromagnetic waves and experimentation; wireless communication and technical development; and radio broadcasting and commercialization. Many individuals—inventors, engineers, developers, businessmen - contributed to produce the modern idea of radio and thus the origins and 'invention' are multiple and controversial. Early radio designs could not transmit sound or speech and were called the "wireless telegraph" then many years later the radios were known as the wireless for the 30's, 40's & 50's and so on. Radio really came into it's own with the pirate radio stations transmitting the latest and great pop tunes out at sea, then when this was outlawed and BBC Radio 1 was born and the rest is history. This is your chance to model any style of radio since it's inception, this includes car radios, cb radio's, antique radio's, clock radio's, , modern radio's & portable radio's ![]() Modelling Time: 60 Mins. Prizes: 1st Place - £30 worth of 3DTotal downloadable products & a gold award badge. 2nd Place - £10 worth of 3DTotal downloadable products & a silver award badge. Honourable Mentions - Bronze Award Badges Above All Else Have Fun & Good Luck! My Starter ![]() ![]() Everything is shader based, no textures used apart from the speaker cloths ![]()

I hope I will be able to make it this week. I can say already my entry will be either FuG 7a or FuG 16ZF or ZS. As those types were used in one particular airplane, I intend to use it in that project I mentioned last week

A warm welcome to the forums, and a pretty good start for someone only just starting out into the world of 3D! The texturing is pretty good i'm not sure if the radio stations are meant to be mirrored or not but either way it looks good. I look forward to seeing more from you in this & up and coming SMC's
![]() ..... Just a few things though, you can have 2x composite images for your clays, beauty shots and most importantly what you entry is missing... wireframes. So please ammen your original post with the images to have this entry allowed ok ![]()

I have choosen to model the Swedish Armed Forces, Communication Radio 180
i ran out of time on the modeling so thats why its so low poly and i only modelled the top side. I will update with a beauty render if i get time. Updated with a super fast beauty render Maybe i get time to do one object more this week. And do it better that time.

Hi everybody,
Yesterday I posted my entry of this SMC here and today, without any warning, i saw i was banned forever from this forum due to spamming. (I was only one day active here) I don't know what i've possibly have done wrong and I don't recall I was spamming. Maybe I did something wrong without realizing.. (I'm not so familiar with forums) Anyway I have no intentions of causing trouble or spamming! I just want to follow this forum, compeet with the challenges (not for winning but for learning, since this is a place where there are a lot of 3D artists from who i can learn to improve my own skills since i'm a self learned and i'm only working with 3dsmax for about a year). I hope i can start with a fresh slate and have my fun with the awesome challenges ![]() |

So this is my entry
a Siemens StandardSuper e9. I couldn't finish it whitin the time limit so this is what i could make in the 60min. the Texturing took me a little longer cause I've never unwrapped an object before, so I had to figure it out first. And yes the radio stations are mirrored cause the reference image was not complete so i had to improvise and i did this per accident ![]() |
