trax editor for different characters .. ?

hello,

hope i can get some help for some game developers, or anyone else..

see how in games, all characters can make the same moves? .. for sure they don't animate the same thing 40 times for each characters, they just do it once and assign it to every character..
I'd like to know how they do that .. (???)
Trax editor? or coding? (never did either of these, but i'll start on the one i need when i know which to use)

can you create clips for a character, and use them for other characters?
let's say a one on one basketball game: I want both to be able to do the same moves.. how do i do it?

(I use maya)
thanks a lot
