Developping A Game, Tips Please

hello everyone..

I would like to know the different steps to develop a game .. i mean.. how should i start?
I have the idea down, models, environments, animations sketched out.. (nothing on the computer yet)

Here's what i heard of how it works, let me know if wrong or right, and tell me how to do it the most effective way. thanks

1)- Make a 2mins demo reel, showing the idea and animations for the game. 2mins should show the most important parts of it.. (like a trailer)

2)- try to get an interview with a contractor/investor , who would approve the idea, and provide the funds to develop the game.

3)- with the financing, hire a team to build the entire project.

4)- project done, either find a cpmpany to sell it to, or a publisher to publish it..

I have everything to do 1).. and probably 2)
If there's a quicker way, please let me know (like just selling the idea, demo, maybe animations too.. )
I don't know the process of game developping, but i really am into this idea of making my own.. but don't know how much effort I need.

I know this game doesn't exist yet, and i am SURE it will work, but some big companies could start on it.. so should i get copyrights on the idea?

ANY advice/coment welcome.

IF any website on it, or even books, let me know too.

thank you so much

I've never heard of it working that way. I've heard of instances where a finished game was published by a company, such as Ea for example. But not one thats agreed to fund the games development on the strength of a 2 minute demo. You could use the 2 minute demo to apply for a job as a designer / artist i guess.

The best way to do it imo is to build up an online team of friends to help you make the game. Then submit the game(in its entirety) to a games company to see if they will publish it.

if you talking about building a full functional modern game of retail standard (Halo, warcraft, DX2 ect) it ould take a team of pros a couple of years working full time and then some to build the whole thing from the ground up (are you making you own engine? AI? physics?) so a group of friends with eclectic talents might get you a demo together.
I can't see ayone nivestingin the game untill you have a team together frankly.
Do you have any expeariance in the industry? as PH7 says, i'd say use a demo to get a foot in the door, learn the industry and either work you way up or strike out on your own (but be prepaired to fail (sorry, but it happens to often)).
The idea you are putting forward would have worked in 1987, production values and investments are alot greater now though.

i dont knowif i may ask, what type of game is this, rts, fps.... or a new type of game entirely?

Anyways, i wouldnt just giv up on the idea. Work with a team of friends (might wanna participate in a couple of mods first) and build a short a functional but not yet "retailable" version of the game. (or if a completely new type of game, then develop a way to code it.........) by then you might already be in the industry and will hav a better chance of doing this for real.

If it doesnt work, well then you just learned a hell of a lot! And knowledge is always better than money, they can take money away, but not knowledge (well in someways they can but.....)

P.S. i know nothing about the gaming industry so dont quote me or consider this valid advice, this is just my take on the situation.

thanks for your post.

the game i was thinking about is a sports game, not entirely new, but this kind has not "yet" been released..

sorry but i gave up the idea.. cus by the time i'd finish one version, 30games will be out already.. i wanted to be one of the first to develop this game, but someone already did, release is for October 03 ..

I would stay on the project if I had a team.. but don't know much ppl in the field yet.

/me can't wait for Oct 3rd when "European Cow Dung Throwing" gets released from Ea

While your thinking of other game ideas why dont you write a simple fps or something so when you do get another idea you'll have more knowledge on what goes into creating a game?
