Dear Diary,

I have no idea what day it is anymore. Each day blends into the next one. With nothing to see but water, some days I can’t tell the difference between the sea and the sky. I can’t remember the last time I saw land. I almost lost my mind a few times, but then the thought of all that gold at the end of this quest brought me back to my right mind. I’ve had to toss a few of my men overboard since setting sail. A real shame as the first to go was our cook. Now we just peanut butter and banana sandwiches, 3 times a day, 7 days a week. I miss the taste of chicken. I don’t like forcing my own men to walk the plank, but with 8 ships under my command, I can’t afford to show my men any weakness. I only employ the meanest of mean, the bottom of the barrel. If one of them gets a glimpse of weakness, it could mean the end of me. Better they sleep with the fish, than me.

Due Date: Sunday May 5th 11:59pm GMT

Idea: (choose one)

Think “best pirate alive” Think up what the best pirate alive would look like. No matter what planet or timeline this character lives in, (s)he will need money, but with no time to get a job, all that’s left to do is steal. Pillage and plunder. That’s what Pirates are good at, and your Pirate is the best at it. In a word cursed by Pirates, the only way to beat them is to join them. Being the best is hard work and takes time. Keep that in mind when creating your Pirate.

Character: Model a character that resembles a swash buckling, treasure hunting, scallywag of a Pirate. Timeline is up to you, as well as the planet this pirate lives on.

Vehicle: Hold your tongue and say, “I was born on a Pirate ship”

Environment: What would the world look like covered in water and run by pirates. Model a chunk of it.

Poly limit:

12,000 Tris Total. You can do whatever you want with these, just don’t get carried away and don’t exceed the 12,000 Tri Limit. Remember, the limit tells you where to stop, there is no minimum, so use as much of the limit as you see fit. If 12,000 tris is too much for you, use 5,000, or 3,000. It’s ok, I won’t mind.

Textures:

-1 x 1024 Color Map
-1 x 1024 Reflection Map
-1 x 1024 Specular Map
-1 x 1024 Specular Color Map
-1 x 1024 Normal Map
-1 x 1024 Bump Map
-1 x 1024 Opacity (transparency) Map
-1 x 1024 Glow map
-1 x 1024 Glossiness map.

You can not chop it up into multiple smaller textures.

Textures can be hand-painted or you can use photographic sources. Do what you do.



Pedestals/Stand

You do not have to create one, but if you do, understand that there is no texture or tri limit. You can go as crazy as you want, or keep it basic.


Restrictions:

-Joint entries are OK for this challenge. You can work with a concept artist, that’s it. You must do all modeling yourself, that includes any and all sculpting.

-Your entry must be specifically created for this challenge. Do not use any pieces from previous personal works.

-There are no lighting restrictions.

-All Game/Render Engines are allowed.

-You must create a W.I.P Thread to show off your work in progress.

-If you submit a final entry, you must also vote when the time comes or your entry will be disqualified.

-1 A link to your W.I.P. thread.

- 1 x Winning shot. This image should consist of your subject depicted in its most awesome angle.

- 1 x Beauty shot of your subject. Feel free to put multiple angles of your subject or just one big version or your subject on this page. You are free to do whatever post effects you like on this image. Be careful how you do this though, simple is often better. It’s up to you.

- 1 x Construction shot of your subject. Feel free to put multiple wire frame shots or just one big wire frame shot on this page. It is up to you.

- 1 x Texture sheet that includes all your used sheets squeezed into "one" sheet.

- Concept Sheet (if you have one)

I'd like to participate in this challenge and I'd like to know if it's allowed to use an artist's concept art from deviantart without contacting the artist for permission.
Is it allowed to even ask a question like this?

You can use their concept for the challenge, but, unless you get permission, you wont be able to use the final product in your portfolio or demo reel.

In the end, it's always best to get another artists permission.

Small community, small following, big feet. Sorry to hear about the tech problems, they always seem to hit me during the crunch before a deadline too.

From the technical aspect I would expect more participation from aspiring artists simply because these comps actually reflect real world limits and deadlines... on a real project you sometime have days or hours to create assets for a scene. I remember once I had 35 hour to create around 200 assets, most where simple and took next to no time at all, but still that is a lot of content for less than a week of work.

This is good practice to get into the habit of meeting deadlines. I just don't know how you sell that to a community to get them involved.
