Hi. This is my first SMC attempt. I hope I'm submitting this correctly. (I wasn't sure if the dimensions given were a limit for all the pictures combined, or each picture individually). By the way, I don't know the lighting/rendering side of Max that well yet, so it's a good thing this is only being judged on the modelling aspect. Okay, enough stalling... here it is:

Makes me appreciate how fast Pablo works

Perhaps a silly question, but my renders save-out to the wrong aspect ratio. When I save, then open in Photoshop, it seems the correct aspect ratio, but when adding text, it's skewed. Using 'View> Pixel Aspect Ratio Correction' fixes the text so it's not stretched, but the image stretches very small. (These were print screened )

As an architecture student I have some good (and painful) experience with interior design and for some of the models I had previous experience from tight deadlines in my uni assignments and freelance works.

Not going to make the standard comment for your entries because I feel the SMCs are such an important place to learn some techniques and attitudes for us modellers to have in the real world.

ocin Clean and elementary entry. Every object in the scene serves a specific composition purpose and it really looks that it has a planned modelling workflow maybe from previous experience. There are no redundant meshes and that is great but sometimes there is some time lost in having a perfect mesh that could be well spent supplying your entry with detail.

Bezzen"Utter and complete panic" Bezzen. Thatīs what every artist, architect, designer and now cg artist faces in front of an empty sheet of paper or an empty screen. The only way to face the panic from the modelling is really knowing what your capabilities are, because the SMC is not a problem of what to do but of how to make. I usually face my empty sheetwhen I am really contaminated with ideas and the knowledge of how to express them thatīs when I find that this empty sheet is no longer empty but full of possibilities. Clean entry with no modelling flaws whatsoever but maybe empty from that fear very common in all of us but remember, the only way to combat panic is by defeating unpremeditation with knowledge and intent.

rockyourteeth An entry where itīs really clear that little objects can make a solid proposition. Itīs pretty visible that there was some research of knowing which objects could make it into a mouses room but those 80 minutes could have become 90 if that same intent of accuracy had translated into the very environment of those objects. As a matter of importance, in architecture that the canvas (the environment) has to be as usable and rich as the objects themselves. Brave and original entry.

Neil_F01 Yup. Planning. As cg artists we know that some objects in our time are not as viable with standard modelling techniques. That is what makes the SMCs a great window of different suggestions because of the great range of different abilities and that we all have. Some are good "hard surface modellers" some are kick ass "NURBS modellers". Itīs not about the object (the fountain) but about the technique you fell more fond of and showing in the challenge how fluent you ere in your own language. Find your own modelling language and stick to it as if it was your signature.

timberwo7ves Rawr timberwo7ves! I see no bit of panic in your entry what I see is an intelligent combination of different modelling techniques for every object in the scene. What differs a little bit from Neils comment is that we all should question our modelling techniques and open ourselves to some other possibilities of geometric decomposition of our models. What if a mouse is nothing else but a squashed hemisphere? What about spending that time in giving it a tail? Sometimes in architecture what professors tell you is to decompose your already made and pristine finished project into basic volumes.
That īs when you realise that complexity doesnīt come from complication but with repeated iterations of simplistic strategies.

Oh! I think I spent half an hour on this post so maybe John has already started the other SMC.

Oh well I really hope this does nothing but helping everybody to get the attitude and forging some self confidence.

i certainly aint no nurb modeller... lol..

but yeah.. i had some crazy ass idea that it would be cool to have a bedroom filled with water.. with some water fountain... and so set about making the fountain work.. and i think the fountain works quite well.. its flows out the pipe and fills the bowl.. and then over flows and is caught up in the lower bowl before it falls out and over the floor.. and with a bit more time.. it would have spread out across the floor in the rushed ripple effect.. but alas time got away from me...

ah well.. good job everyone.. some great entries this time around.. see you in the next one..
