Exclamation FREE 3D MODELLING PROGRAMMES

I need help choosing a free modeling program I can use to make characters for games and such. I have downloaded gmax from discreet and fooled around just to get the hang of things but I am not certain if it can be used to mod games. I also heard about milkshape 3d and blender and I need someone to give me a 1-10 scale on all of them please. your help is truly appreciated.

Well.... I personally think Gmax is the best, but that just might be my 3dsmax dependancy takling there (Oh i do love the interface so!).

Havnt had much experience with milkshape or any other free progs but my suggestion would be to try them out....WHY YOU ASK???

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

BECAUSE THEIR FREE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But I am sure Gmax was created with the intent for moding.

if you are talking about free wings3d all the way. wings has some impressive subdiv modelling featrures for a 1.something meg software.
wings can only export to .ndo .3ds .obj .mdl and .wrml formats so it can't be used directly for games but there may be some plugins available for that purpose.

If someone can round up some url's of free & cheap software, I'll make this a sticky thread so everyone can benefit.
I'll start you off:

www.wings3d.com - freeware poly modeller
www.hash.com - cheap character animation software.

www.anim8or.com pretty nice animation software
www.planetside.co.uk a very good terrain generator
www.openfx.org rendering software

milkshape is used essencially for modding but wings3d is a good moddeling program as well as nendo!

Hamapatch is a nice free modeling program. It's a spline modeler, good for cars and organic stuff, but I'm sure it could be used for low-poly modeling if you output your models at a resolution of 1.

What about lightwave free ed, maya ple and i think there is a learning edition for rhino3d (i got it a long time ago). Those who seek free software won't be using it for creating commercial images/anim anyway, so I think these are very good options as well.

Yeah, gidday. I'm an absolute amateur, but I can say that Gmax is a damn sight better than Milkshape3D, what with all the features and the stack wossname and the bending and the smoothing and...and... ... ! Milkshape is real basic. But if you're making models for HL (dunno about HL2. *mutter* *mutter* *hackers* *curse*), apparently you can export to .ms3d from Gmax and then compile to .mdl with the free version of Milshape, even after it's expired.

So...groovy. =)

i just tried milkshape and it made me (sick)
gmax is ok to use after you change the quad menu text colour.

In my opinion wings is still number one its waywayway better than any other freeware soft.
