Needs the spherify modifier after the turbosmooth. go ahead give it a shot,
pay close attention to the detail change within a profile view port.
u can even create a regular Max sphere and do an overlap if u like.

if some beginners that want to start 3d, listen to us talking so much about a sphere, they think OHHH if a sphere is so hard to model, I think I will forget about modeling

you can of course always go with what grant says, cause he knows what heīs talking about. but for sub-dīs sake and to have it all in quads - model it properly.

hereīs a screengrab of the corner-geometry. hope this helps.
last picture is the spehere with glossy material and some bright light, as you can see - the pinching is neglectable.

Okay yeah, you are right. To get it perfectly round you need a Spherify modifier but you still get a pretty close result using only turbosmooth.

Greetings. I'd like to start off by saying that I saw the original 3 tutorials and loved them and referenced them quite a lot... but then I took a break from CG work and when I came back, the link said the site was being worked on. I waited and waited, hoping the site would come back, but it has yet to do so and since I saw the original link on this forum, I did a search for it, hoping to find out what happened. I see that the tuts have been redone into one video and uploaded, but the link for it doesn't have the video up. Has it been uploaded and posted again and I didn't see it? I remember the basics of it, but I like watching the techniques being done. Thanks.

Hey yeah thats sort of what i got in one attempt before posting here. ^__^
I guess there is no perfect way to do it with any kind of smooth modifier.
although, we are all pretty close. thanks for taking the time to throw the examples together!

@Saith
Yes sir!... no more turbo-smoothed cubes pictures from me. lol
I could just make a sphere icon ?... lol

Hi,

I'm joining in this thread and want to thanks Sathe for his great tutorial, I wish everyone should be like you.
You have great skills and you share it for free.

So now, here is the problem.
I'm trying to study hard edge modeling and even if I think that I've grasp the concept correctly there are some shape who drive me nuts.

Like the picture attached.

I don't know how to handle these kind of shape, when you have a curved shape and you have to add some creases on it.

I can't avoid pinches and I don't have a clue on how to prevent this issues.

If someone know how to deal with these I'm listening.

Sometimes you can get away with a chamfer and leaving a 5 sided and it's still clean but it doesn't work in all case. Should also let your edges flow around the hard edges unlike what you've done in the top left of that shape, it's only the sharp points that go inwards that should ever cause problems.

This may not work for that shape but in a number of shapes you can save a lot of time by modelling it flat and using a Bend Mod or few. Few examples here that are really low poly yet super clean. Notice the refraction at the edge of the glass which shows it's a sharp inwards point like you have in your example yet there's zero pinching.

Thank you Linc.

I've tried to make a flat version of this shape then use a bend modifier just to see what it does, but I still have pinching.
Even if I dont in the flat version.
I really don't know a good workflow to avoid these pinching who is for me the hardest things in polygonal modeling.
But I'm a little bit obsessive about this, because I want to have no pinching at all.

Here is a render of a test object where I found these shape the most challenging while you will ever see pinching.
On this object there are pinch on each corner, there are still visible in the render, but maybe that's the best I can do?

I attached a render and the wireframe of my object.
