Introducing THE GAME CHALLENGE from IFCC! Sponsored by 3dtotal. ENDS: 9 March 2015

THE IFCC GAME CHALLENGE! Sponsored by 3dtotal

Submit your design in one or more categories to win IFCC tickets and many other great prizes! Submit your work as digital (2D, 3D, photobashing, etc) or traditional artwork (acrylic, oil, watercolor, etc) - it’s really up to you!

“The Game” is the name of the game. Like – “Dog”, the dog. But why such name? Because it is supposed to be the game of all games, where all known visual styles and types of gameplay meet, and where rules are made to be broken. The purpose of this challenge is to start creating a library of visual content for “The Game” project, such as characters, vehicles and environments. We are also currently looking for the project’s logo and some elements of visual identity. This will be used on print ads, promo materials etc. Competitors can choose their preference – the character of King Tomislav, Blue Monster, a TDG vehicle or an “Ignis” or the destroyed, but fertile environment named “Vacuo”. If you want, you can also create your own independent content. Since it is just a concept, not a finished product, we invite you to join this challenge and help us create The Game. While doing so you can win tickets for the IFCC festival and other cool prizes!

CHARACTER DESIGN
You don’t have to follow any rules but make it look good. For example, if you are going after realistic character pay attention to anatomy, proportions an all that jazz. Good description is also very important.

VEHICLE DESIGN
Car, space ship, bike, boat, submarine, trolley… anything really. It can be super fast or super slow or it doesn’t have to move at all. Make it pretty or ugly, just make it look good. Describe its purpose.

ENVIRONMENT DESIGN
Any good looking environment is acceptable. Yes, there are no strict rules to follow. Be creative and think of your own environment or get inspired by existing ones. Google can help.

THE GAME LOGO
You might think “hey, well this is easy”. Actually – no it’s not. Although it doesn’t have to have as much elements as character or vehicle have, good logo is not easy to do. Not true? Prove it.

Feel free to use one or more of these subjects as inspiration for your design(s), or create a design based on your own concept:

● CHARACTER DESIGN > KING TOMISLAV
● King Tomislav was a very powerful figure in Croatian history. He was a ruler of Croatia in the Middle Ages. He reigned from around 910 until 928 AD, first as the duke of the Duchy of Croatia and then, from 925, as the first king of the Croatian Kingdom. Tomislav is celebrated as the first Croatian King and the founder of the first united Croatian state. Since historical sources on Tomislav are scarce, the exact year of his accession and his death are not known and most of his reign is shrouded in mystery. In order to successfully complete the challenge you must best the rest by producing an outstanding piece of design work that will display the power and magnitude of the first Croatian king and all his mystical glory.

● CHARACTER DESIGN > BLUE MONSTER (or just Blue)
● The second subject is Blue Monster. Let us explain something regarding Blue: the word “monster” derives from Latin monstrum, an aberrant occurrence, usually biological, that was taken as a sign that something was wrong within the natural order. Sea monsters specifically are sea-dwelling mythical or legendary creature, often believed to be of immense size. Marine monsters can take many forms, including sea dragons, sea serpents or multi-armed beasts. They can be slimy or scaly and are often pictured threatening ships or spouting jets of water. The definition of a “monster” is subjective and some sea monsters may have been based on scientifically accepted creatures such as whales and types of giant squid. Our Blue monster is a docile, kind natured creature, not big physically but big hearted. His appearance is disturbing, but his intentions are not. We do not think of him as a monster. He is just Blue. Or is she just blue?

● VEHICLE DESIGN > IGNIS
● The third subject is “Ignis”, a vehicle for transporting (and using if necessary) dangerous goods. “Ignis” operates on the ground and also in the air for transporting the following: explosive substances and articles, gases including compressed, liquified and dissolved under pressure gases and vapors, flammable gases (e.g. butane, propane acetylene), non-flammable and non-toxic gases that are likely to cause asphyxiation (e.g. nitrogen, CO2) , oxidisers (e.g. oxygen), toxic compounds (e.g. Chlorine, Phosgene), flammable liquids, flammable solids, self-reactive substances and solid desensitized explosives, substances likely to cause spontaneous combustion, substances which in contact with water emit flammable gases, radioactive materials and infectious substances. There are so many dangerous substances out there and we think you got the idea.

● ENVIRONMENT DESIGN > VACUO
● Last, but not least is “Vacuo”, an innocent, clear, pure environment that is just waiting to be created. It is a fertile ground, but not completely fulfilled. It will be filled with plants and creatures. It is an isolated area with exotic waters in which different and mesmerising vegetation grows and blooms. Some unknown creatures are known to wander to Vacuo; mostly insects, small reptiles and rodents. When the vegetation is in bloom birds are known to fly there. The most exotic parrots and pelicans have been seen there, breathtaking in in color. Vacuo isn’t empty it’s just at its genesis. It flourishes with life just like an oasis in the desert.

● DESIGN BASED ON YOUR OWN CONCEPT
● Be creative, think of your own character, vehicle or environment. It’s not that hard. Or is it?

Everyone's a winner! Check out the prizes!!

That's correct! You are allowed to submit your existing works as long as they are unpublished and you can provide at least 3 WIP images to show the progress. Looking forward to seeing your work!

hi Lynette, forgive me if it´s a stupid question, but unpublished means that no image of the work has been in any internet forum?? I mean if I have a model started but I have already shared some of the process, I could not use it for the contest??

Maybe I can help. "Unpublished" means that it's not used for some other product like book, game or film for which someone else claims rights. It is very important that author owns rights for the work of art he or she wants to submit. So for example - you can submit design that you have created for some video game but only if you own rights to use that design for anything else. Hope it helps.

Just wanted to ask about the Blue monster Character. So do you want a Blue Sea Monster or are you saying no to the literal meaning of the word monster? It confused me reading the first bit. Then it says "Our Blue monster is a docile, kind natured creature, not big physically but big hearted. His appearance is disturbing, but his intentions are not. We do not think of him as a monster. He is just Blue. Or is she just blue?" so it makes me think the latter, you want people to avoid the Blue sea monster? or am i wrong

You're not wrong, but you're not right either. Open your mind. You don't have to follow that description if it's too confusing for you but you'll have to write your own description when you'll be submitting your own design. Just make it work

I don't really understand the topic for the LOGO DESIGN challenge. What is the task, what should it represent - the game and it's vast worlds, a particular area, organization.
I hope this does not violate the rules.

Thank you
