As the sun sets you notice the speed of the wind increasing. A slight rumble can be heard off in the distance. Everyone seems to be getting a little antsy. A storm is coming. The rain starts as a gently drizzle, quickly turning into a full on down pour. A flash of lightening breaks the night’s sky causing instant panic in the group. The commotion sends one of your group into the fence, knocking it over. As everyone escapes the enclosure they used to call home a two legged creature tries to block the way. They are quickly taken care of. More of these two legged creatures can be found off in the distance, so that’s where we are headed. It’s feeding time and we’re all hungry.


Due Date: Sunday January 12th 11:59pm GMT


Idea:

This is a SketchFab Sponsored Challenge. This means, you must display your final model and texture using the SketchFab program. Go take a look at the SketchFab website to get an idea of what the program can do for you.

Sketchfab is a web platform for publishing your 3d models interactively, anywhere online. Basically, its like Youtube but for 3D models. In fact, they're already partnered with 3D Total, so that you can embed the viewer in the forums with one click. See this tutorial on how to use here "

For this challenge, you have 6 weeks till the deadline, use that time wisely to think of 6 items you may find in a dinosaur ravaged island. You have 90 minutes per item. Feel free to post each item individually as you work on them. Then, come up with a creative way to bring all the items together

Examples: boots, socks, pants, shirt, glasses, flash light, etc. Anything you want.

Restrictions:

1). Each challenge we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modeling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief can be removed and the poster disqualified.

2). You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified.

3). Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like and must include a clear and easy to see wireframe of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Wire renders/ Cell Shaded or Screengrab wireframes are acceptable. Any wireframes we cannot see correctly will be disqualified. The key is for us to be able to see the wireframes clearly to ascertain how you modelled the subject matter.

4). You MUST include the following details with each submission:

A). Software used
B). Time spent creating the model.
C). A Clay Render of your models.

Any further information is voluntary but posts not containing the required information can be removed and the poster disqualified.

5). Post THREE images per entry which must be no larger than 1280x1024 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 195k. 1 image for your wireframes and 1 for your clay combined with & 1x final optional composite for beauty renders. These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page. Do not link to external images files. Images larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials)
will be removed and the poster disqualified.

6). The creation of displacement maps, normal maps and any splines drawn out in an external program other than your modeling software are to be included in your modeling time.

7). Time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the allocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post it as long as it's recognizable.

8). Posting the same entry twice in a challenge is considered to be double posting and will result in a disqualification. When asked to fix a previous post due to DQ or any other reason, you must fix the first post, or delete it altogether and create a new one.

9). The Winner must email jo@3dtotal.com to claim their prize.

10). Only 1st place & 2nd place (i.e. the runner up) can claim a prize.

These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions!

So just to be clear - 6*90 minutes - 90*per item or can it be a set of items in that week. Don't believe someone may spend 90 minutes to model a sock (example given) so can he model a sock, belt and hat within those 90 minutes and call it a week?

Are we limited to 90 minutes per item and 6 items in total - then think of a complex model to fit in the time slot perfectly, or we're limited to 90 minutes - limitless objects.

Hopefully that still doesn't limit what an item contains - like a crate with dried up grass and dinosaur eggs... still one environment item (i guess)

Oh yeah definately, if you wanna go that route that's fine, you could (if so inclined) model as much as possible into each entry up to 90 mins and end up with a really crackin' set of items classed as one part.

Hello. New to the forum and these challenges and am considering joining in from time to time.

Got a question though: Is there a limit or restriction to how much digital painting/editing can be done on or of the final render?

For example, if I were to model/texture/render half of an object and paint in the rest of the object, is this against the rules? These are obviously 3D challenges, but there are also multiple 2D-based techniques that can greatly enhance the final renders, whether it's digitally painting/Photoshopping certain elements or applying certain filters to the objects or the entire scene (which is also obvious).

Considering there's no time/artistic limit on texture creation and scene 'building', I'm just curious if this extends to digital painting as well.

I would say that your entry should primarily be 3D, and post effects should equal to less than say 20% of the finished set of models....... HOWEVER..... you could in theory spend as much time as you wanted on digitally painting the elements that you create

for example

If you created a cryo suitcase which contained Dino DNA within and you wanted to digitally paint the case & test tubes, mechanism etc then yeah you could spend as long as you like.....

Just don't spend too much painting on the post processing part of the final piece that's all

If you feel you can micro manage the time best to suit your needs then sure, just remember to keep tabs on your models......... but yeah if you take 35 mins to create your first entry in order to dedicate the remaining 55
on the next model then go for it

I mean really you should strive to use the time as best as possible, but say after you've modelled all 6 items and you tally up the time spent..... any time left can be salvaged to tweak models
