Battle Chess - Rook

I'm in! In know, REALLY late (maybe too late) but I have been lurking this thread while on vacation. I think I've got a good design. I'm playing off the name "Rook" as it is an actual bird. I'm thinking something like the guards in Stargate. Birdmen.

Either way, started rough modeling last night, I'll have some pics up. Total noob, but definitely inspired by this contest, and this is the only way to learn, right? I'm going to work my @ss off to finish.

Thanks Assassin. Looks like you're really coming along.

Got the basic body form done.

Extremely psyched! Just bought a Wacom Intuos4 (9x12) and I've been nose deep in "Introducing ZBrush 4" all week. This is my first time using and I have to say I love not having to push and pull vertices!

Couple paint-overs. Simple head and armor beginning ideas.

Quick Update.

Awesome to see you guys finishing and submitting! I've got a long day of work tomorrow.

I'm wondering if anyone is rigging their characters to pose or just masking and rotating parts?

Hey stuGrimson! Your model is coming together, looking good! Is that a bird like figure that needs a wing support? I like that.
I did rig my model, but I think it is up to you how you pose the character. Keep it up!

Awesome, thanks Tony, for the comp and the advice on posing. Great job on the model, makes me want to listen to Liquid Swords and turn on the XBox!

I wanted to integrate the wings into the armor, but then i figure since he is a mutant birdman, maybe he didn't have wings and required a retrofit set. Better living thru science! Working on the legs and arms now.. crunch time.

I like the foot armor especially, but it's all looking good. And crunch time is right!

Edit: In response to your question about rigging, I personally rigged mine in Blender, but masking and rotating may be easier and faster for you.

Sculpty. So weird to think everyone's basically in a different time zone. It's 4 am in NYC, and I have about 16 hours left to finish..

Update.

Wings need detail (and some explanation as to how they physically work). "Kilt" needs definition. I still have all the UVs to work on. But first I need to learn how to unwrap in Maya. Anyone use RoadKill?

I need a miracle. I going to continue to work on this one past the deadline just to have a finished model.

Thanks for the help guys, everyone did a great job. I'll be watching for the next contest.

So disappointed, but I learned a TON. This is my first real character build in Maya and I just cracked open ZBrush for the first time this week. It has changed everything. This contest has taken me to the next step. I feel like for months I've been just watching tutorials and reading books but not producing anything. Now I'm knee-deep! Either way, thanks again, I'm definitely going to be more active on here and looking forward to Dominance War next year!!!

If the thread stays open for a few more days, maybe I'll post what I have when it's done.

Jack

Amen to that! That's why I always try to compete whenever I can, win or lose, I've still learned a ton this competition and I'm sure I'll learn a ton more next competition!

Stu, always nice when one progresses, and by the way you're talking, it seems like you took a giant leap. Congrats man.

But, i find this dude interesting. You should open upba thread in either the lowpoly section or organics section and continue with him from there. I'd like to see his one finished, and more people would notice this were it either aforementioned section

G/l dude.
