Oh I totaly understand what you guys are saying, i just thought, seeing as we are discussing a possible IFC, it would be good to just brainstorm some ideas about minimising any possible cheating, Unfortunately it looks like there isnt going to be a way to prevent it without interfering with the Fun nature of the comp in its current stage.
Instead, i will just get a my nail and board ready in case It does happen :P

yep thats a pretty solid point.

is it possible to make a zscript that automatically saved a screen grab every 30 minutes and showed a clock in the corner? i think posting 6 pics on a 3 hour sculpt could be a reasonable entry requirement.

but there is no way to stop cheating, as artists, its our job to find ways around problems and make fiction appear true. everyone here is well suited for cheating when it comes to a visual medium. but unless youre giving out Cintiques or cash, most wouldnt take the time or effort to cheat. anytime there is somthing cool up for grabs, it would be good to ditch the time limit,

I really don't see a point of all this... the competition was fine as it was and there's no way one can avoid a cheat! If someone's cheating then in the end they're only fooling themselves about their abilities which will bite them in the behind sooner or later :P
All in all I'm willing to believe in the participants' honesty as long as they don't come up with a 10 character scene and claim it's been only 3 hrs work LOL Haven't really been able to point out any cheats so far though...

We have written to a number of forums but only received 1 reply as of yet. We are going to spend a few more days chasing them up, this means a further delay of 1 week.

We will start a new comp on Tues 22nd July with or without them.

Thanks

Tom

Great, good luck with that Tom. These challenge are a big part of threedy now.
In the future, how about using reputable unbiased judges for these contests.

I really think you should just ask..Alex Oliver,Meats miere and a few other really nice skillfull talent artist too Judge it..Im sure they would20 minutes worth of checking..And honestly I think it would be alot better than the really bad system you have.. ...Any new sculpters find this rather dawnting.
Hope ya work it out .

Why not just have a designated moderator or 2 judge it? The SMCs have been that way for a long time and rarely has there been any sort of problem.

Just a thought for an upcoming challenge.
Sculpting Challenge #007 should be about Spies and Secret Agents.
There, said it

I'd be willing to co-judge or help judge the sculpting challenges.

I'm not a sculpter at all and have never participated in the sculpting challenges, but I am a keen follower and voter.

So if it comes to it, i'm offering my services if needed.

Just thought i'd put that out there.

Cheers

CG.

well one thing I personally like about those challenges is the popular voting system [like in CG Talk's Hardcore Challenge]... giving a vote to some great artists is fine and dandy but that would exclude, Alex for instance, from participating - so I hope it doesn't happen LOL, cause I like what he comes up with + I know from observation that having someone like that as part of the competition boosts participation for many reasons, one of them being the opportunity to learn from them...

I'm going to stay out of figuring out how to do the comp, I'll just stick to suggesting topics for future sculpts.

Maybe it's just the fantasy/horror geek in me, but I think it would be cool to re-interpret characters from fables, fairy tales, or classic stories. Mcfarlane has done this a couple times already with his Twisted Land of Oz (Wizard of Oz horrified), McFarlane's Monsters (traditional movie monsters like Frankenstein and Dracula re-interpreted), or Twisted Fairy Tales (Deranged interpretations of Humpty Dumpty, Little Red Riding Hood, etc...) Even his new Warriors of the Zodiac is an awesome theme (zodiac sign animals as beastly warriors).

He's covered a lot of good ones, but there are tons of themes to be reinterpreted. They don't even have to be horror themed, anyone could remake a scary character with butterfly wings and a tu-tu. Some ideas to be re-interpreted in a cool new style might be:
  • A character to represent one of the Seven Deadly Sins
  • A Disney character
  • A Dr. Seuss character
  • A nursery rhyme character
  • a fruit or a vegetable turned into a character?
  • etc, etc, etc...

I just think re-interpretations are a lot of fun because you've already got a starting point, whereas "make anything you want" comps are a little harder to get going off the concept phase.

Just some ideas, thanks.
