Would love to be able to invest more time into this dude.

Got a couple of hours into him today, let's see how far I can get.

Quick blockout of him.

Anatomy's a bit of a struggle, and I'll be adding loads and loads of carapace.

love it!! try to bring him some more insect-like armor plates since now he has a little bit too humanish anatomy imo. keep it up!

Good work on shapes, I`d suggest a pose with more elevation from the ground at the moment the legs are quite flexed or you could move the pelvis up so that there`s less contraction in the rear legs.
Hope it makes sense.
Keep up the good work.

Thanks guys

This is going slowly but surely.

Yeah, I agree the anatomy's a bit too humanlike, but I'll be adding Carapace plates all over soon. There are too few close ups of the ultralisk, so I'm gonna look into Hydras and Mutas for the anatomy, without sacrificing the over all shape of the dude.

But today I found time to redesign the head.

I like the idea to go away from the usual ultralisk design. Keep it up!

I love it! Like some kind of lava monster
The eyes could look more evil or angry though, what do you think. Now they kinda look berserk or crazy
I'm not sure if it's a negative point, dunno if that's what you wanted?

I honestly am not 100% happy with the face. But, this close to a deadline and me not having that much time to work on the guy, I will just have to accept that I haven't the time to spend redesigning him.

But on that note: here's an update with some quick polypainting to bring out the details. Much to do still.

With huge image sizes.

awsome! i'm not sure if it helps but what would improve your forms dramatically is if you separated those plates and the other smaller forms from each other. i mean leaving some forms bigger and deeper and others less deep so your eyes could read everything better. now it's kinda hard to understand the many things going on.
also you could help it by adding some gradients in the textures right behind your bigger forms like below

i hope i helped!

This is to noisy. I prefer more clearer shapes like the first sketches. :P

Maybe just try to break up the smaller details with bigger plates somehow.

keep it up.
