Challenge #1 : September 2007 - Dramatic Sunset

Hi there and welcome to our first Matte Painting Challenge!

Please read this post carefully, as it contains important info and details as the challenge goes a little bit different from what you are used to!

To kick off this new Matte Painting Challenge, we have come up with a topic that is not difficult as we dont want to scare anyone off right from the beginning
  • Topic: Dramatic Sunset
Elements: Ruins, Battleground, Alien, Lake/Island, Dead Forest, Ice

What we are looking for is a dramatic sunset scene, which must contain no more no less than 2 (two) of the elements listed above. There are nice combinations from which you can choose, for example Ice+Ruins+Sunset. Let your imagination fly, this is a great topic

Note: Any image that doesn't contain any 2 of the elements above or doesn't fit with the topic will not be judged.

Note: Please submit only final images here! For work in progress and feedback please use our sub-forums here: http://forums.3dtotal.com/forumdisplay.php?f=92 (In fact I encourage you to use it as often as you can)

Note: The minimum accepted width/height is of 1024px and the recommended one is 1600px.

Judging

The challenge will end on September 30th, after which we will temporary lock the thread while we pick the winners.

We will judge the following aspects of your images:

- Originality
- Topic Fidelity
- Technical Execution
- Composition
- Impression

This month's board is formed by:

Tom Greenway – tom-3DT
Richard Tilbury – rich-3DT
Chris Perrins – Chrisp-3DT
Tiberius Viris – Suirebit-3DT
Waheed Nasir - waheed nasir-3DT

Good luck and have fun!
If you have any questions don't hesitate to contact me!

Sounds Great

this sounds like a fun one to start off with. I don't have to much experience in matte paintings and this may be a good start. Need to start going through my photographs.

So would a ruin in the middle of a frozen lake at sunset be considered too much?

Sounds like a good idea. The more ideas you can mix and make look good in the end the better. I've deff been thinking about ruins and a lake of some sort on an alien planet, so i guess we'll have to see. Maybe it's an icfed alien planet with a frozen lake

The reason I asked that was this piece:

which must contain no more no less than 2 (two) of the elements listed above
Whether I do an alien background will typically be a overhanging moon or something.

I still can't figure out how to make a new thread in the WIP section.

I'm going with Alien, frozen landscape with a distant ruin at sunset.

Yes indeed it's only 2....this time that should prove to be a little bit more challenging.

Hmmm, actually reviewing my WIP, the ruin was looking out of place. Too busy looking.

One Question, Alien can also be alien sky, alien ground, or anything that is not natural in this world right? like futuristic alien-like cities right?

Oh and yeah so (clarification) thats 2 elements only + sunset right?
