December 2007 - otas32 - Day2Night

First approach. A quick sketch for the clouds, a moon I'm still not too happy about, and some tonemapping for the structure.
I don't know if I'm gonna stick to the width, maybe I'll go for a more panoramic view.
I'm still thinking what could be giving the bluish glow from the left to the structure.
I'll start soon on lighting the structure with the moonlight (some lite testing done on the top left).
Also lighting the windows and have them project light outside, specially to the ground.

Critics and comments very welcome

hmmm.. no crits or comments, this must really suck!

Oh well, nevertheless here's another update:

1-Started on higher detail finish on the clouds (I really wanted to start on them ).
2-Still no work on the lighted windows.
3-Did a little more work on the moonlight on structure.
4-Adjusted the moon.
5-Started to define the mountains in the background.
6-Rough sketched the storm in the background.
7-Defined where an extension of the structure's wall will continue.

c'mon... some comments? It can't really be that bad, can it?

Very nice! (It doesn't suck! )
I really like your composition, though the storm you added distracts a little from the focal point (the moon). Maybe make it a bit darker or more distant?

The sky is weird though - why are the clouds brown? (on my screen at least) they should be more of a desaturated blue, and lighter also.
The moon is still too large in my opinion, I think you should make it smaller and raise it a bit, so that the church doesn't cover it up so much.

Great work, and I hope my comments help!

Nice start Otas, I like the clouds.
Its too early to make some critics.
Maybe Some colors corrections beetween the clouds and the church...

Thanx a lot for the comments!

Ok, corrected the cloud color a bit, but you gotta remember the moonlight influences the color of the clouds.
I made the background storm smaller, but also, I think the focal point will, and should be the building, it's just that since I haven't worked on lighting the windows yet, it doesn't call attention to itself just yet.

I made the moon smaller, but I won't put it higher for two reasons:
1- I've already started working volume on the clouds with a specific light angle.
2- I want the moon to bring out one of the crosses of the structure, like it's doing right now.

Thanx again for your comments!

Nice update!

I looked at some pictures of the moon and clouds, and you're right, they are sometimes brown. So you should (I think) make the clouds brown again, but also the church a bit less blue, because right now they seem a little unrelated - from different scenes... (the original lighting on the church also makes it like that)

The storm is perfect now, and it's a great idea too

I was sure the moon was the focal point because the clouds around it and the lines of the church really lead the eye to it...
Did you try putting a full moon instead? I know everyone does that, but it could really bring out the cross in this case (also cool idea)

Actually I drew from my own experience with night photography (o regards to the brownish tint - moonlight is sunlight -yellow/red tint- bounced off a gray surface).

The thing about the blueish tint on the building was always my intention, like on comic books where you have a warm light on one side of the character (the warm moonlight) and a cold light (normally blues) from the opposite side, thus bringing out the volume of the character even more.
What was the thing to solve for me was: What can be the source of light for the cold light, and I thought about a storm (also from night photography experience, since lightning is white light mixed with the blue atmosphere effect)... but since it looks weird right now, it must not be working... then again, the building still needs a lot of work, let's wait and see what happens

Thanx a lot for the comments and suggestions!

it's not working because our mind knows something is wrong; because from our life experience we know that at night there isn't much color (excepting artificial color and light) and the light source and shadows are all tints of gray; Remember we're trying to reproduce reality here

In addition to that, browns don't contrast well with blues because they are both dark colors
