The New Weekly Photo Modelling Challenge #02

How Does This Work Then?

Each week or two myself or 3D Total's photo resource will provide a set of photo's to model from.

Each challenge we would like all who participate to model from the same references to learn, improve or showcase your ability in modelling from a photo set.

In my version of this challenge there are no limits to how many tris/quads you wish to use, but I would like to see you all try to match the photo as closely as possible in size & shape aswell as texturing too.

The Rules

Please post your wires, clays, & any texture sheets and final renders in this thread, wip and on topic chat is also fine here too, these challenges are supposed to be fun and we are not too strict on the rules.

The Prizes

The only prizes are a gold, silver and bronze awards dictated by these lovely little icons

Deadline: Friday 26th October 2012 10:00pm.

This Weeks Challenge: Antique Typewriter

Wow! This should separate the men from the boys. I thought the last one was out of my league... All the more reason to get a start on it a soon as possible. I'm not even sure my PC will be able to cope with the textures needed for this one. Yet another good opportunity to learn some more techniques to limit the models pay load on my PC. CG, I think you have given the word challenge back it's meaning. :P Can't wait to see how others tackle it.

To be honest I think personally it would be texturing as a possible problem, the modelling should be fairly easy. remember you could potentially spend all week modelling it if you started today, there's no time limit after all only a deadline of Friday

Tricky one! I guess we're not allowed to look for other refs or typewriter's dimensions elsewhere, right?

It's purely based on what we see on those refs so we have to imagine how the back should be?

I feel so lost when I don't have top/side/front/back views so I guess it's good practice.

I will allow for other references similar to the references linked in order to help you achieve the final model, that's my fault I should have found some refs that had all angles, sorry guys.

The model of this typewriter is an Underwood No. 5. Any image of that model would suffice as reference.

OK, I won't have much time until next friday so I thought I'd get cracking today.

Running out of ideas for now (damn those intricate pieces):

And quite happy how this one turned out:

How are you guys progressing?

Hey dude, I never get to see your images and have no idea why. Even when I quote then copy and paste the URL in another tab it still won't load. I'm in Australia if that explain anything?

Great start McFly! I'm still researching how the typewriter works and searching for blueprints in google patent search. In the meanwhile I'm beta testing Caustic Visualizer for maya http://vimeo.com/48108727 Great fun looking at your renders in your viewport no need press that render button and really nice while working on lighting and materials.

edit - attached image of patents (not the right model)

CG > thanks man!

filbones > what error do you get when you open it in a new tab?
How about if you click on a direct link?
Do you have AdBlock in your browser?

Servant > cool ref, I'll peep it later if I have time to try and understand how this beast works.
And regarding Caustic Visualizer, seems to be just what we have in Blender with Cycles. Just change viewport to "Rendered" mode and bang. It's all there quickly using GPU (2011 video (it's faster now!) : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8KgrBjt4e9k )

I guess I'm a boy then. Today will be my last update as I'm off next week and won't be doing any 3D at all until the end of the contest. TBH I don't think I would have been able to pull this one off.

Anyway, here are my latest updates.

Looking forward to what you boys/men will come up with! Good luck!

@McFly just downloaded blender to check cycles out(rendered view). I'm not used to navigating in Blender (never touched it). I'm not sure how to select muliple objects in the outliner. I will join you tommorow on modelling the typewriter.

edit- btw nice progress

Servant > selecting an object from the outliner is as simple as clicking on its name.
If you want to have a go at Cycles, I suggest you check out either http://www.blenderguru.com/videos/in...ion-to-cycles/ or http://www.blendtuts.com/Cycles_intro

Both sites are a gold mine in terms of Blender tutorials.

I mean multiple object at the same time in the outliner.
