I wanted to get your thoughts on the fact that there really isnt low poly modeling anymore. there all just cages for normal maps.

I thought low poly and normal maps should go together all the time.
then, what's your definition of low poly? is there a way to approach a low poly model without normal maps? I am kinda confused. |

tyree clearly hasn't payed any attention to the enormous and ever growing mobile game/visualisation industry which is probably going to be where most of us are working in 2-3 years when all the mid-sized studios have collapsed under the cost of trying to compete with AAA titles.
either that or he's just trying to start a fight ![]() |

Poopipe hit the nail on the head. There is still a huge market for mobile gaming. And I do a lot of visualization work that ends up using traditional lowpoly techniques.
Also, old fashioned low poly modeling offers a certain style that certain artists and gamers prefer (similar to vinyl), so it's not likely to disappear any time soon. |

![]() That statement would mainly apply to characters and props. As for building environments (and many other things, but stick to what you know ![]() You wouldn't build a high poly environment, and then a cage for it basically. You'd build the environment as it is going to be in game.

Ofcourse there is low poly modeling. Maybe not as lowpoly as it used to be, But still its low poly. And what poly counts are we talking about now, Because one company may think that 10000 polys is low for their work, and another wont go higher than 500 polys. (Thats what i think about it atleast. not sure how correct it is.)
