Question Do you need to be good at drawing to become a 3D modeler?

I am not very bad at drawing but I don't make art work like you see the concept artists do. Or the character designers. Maybe I could if I work hard at it, but is drawing a requirement to do this type of work? I've tried to do a lot of research on it but I can't find an answer. If anyone knows, can you help me out here

definitely now - point is to be precise in what you do, to have a feeling for transforming reference into a model.

Drawing, sense of perspective, shading (traditional kind) etc give you an edge, but i know a lot of people that take a RL situation, and by reference turn it into 3D artwork

I wrote this article awhile back talking about that question.

It's a tough one to answer... on one hand, you CAN become really really good at 3D without any 2D skills, especially now that software like Zbrush makes it absurdly fast to sketch and prototype in 3D.

On the other hand, it never hurts to have a strong 2D foundation. It's all about investing your time wisely... if you're young, learn both, you have time. If time is of the essence, focus on what you love and supplement your learning with the 2D skills that are most likely to help you.

For example, atelier style drawing isn't all that beneficial to a fantasy/concept artist because it's slow and depends on live reference.

Constructive anatomy, thumbnailing, quick iteration... these are the things you want to focus on because they'll help you develop ideas quickly.

If you are looking to work purely on characters then I would recommend investing in some clay modelling skills too. It's a great way to more easily understand the volumes of each body part, and whilst you can sculpt in a 3d application from scratch, nothing beats doing it with your own hands to really understand how to get the volumes right
