3d Audio Positioning

This may be a dumb question, but I've been looking all over on how to create positional 3d audio for an animation. Namely, attach audio to an object, and animate the audio volume / position based on the position of the camera.

So for example, animating a walk down the sidewalk and making the audio for a car driving past start quiet in the left back speaker, then get louder and move to the front speaker as the car comes into the camera's view.

I use 3dsmax, and I know about how to animate something *based on* a sound, and adding sound tracks etc, but I can't seem to find a good way to attach a sound to an object. How do other people do it??

not sure using max sorry but its very easy to achieve that using unreal editor so if its game quality models/animation etc maybe whack it in there or take care of it in post
