Well usually 3d levels are best to be modeled int the map editor for the game since so many have these today. Unless they made the maps with some high end software. Like they did on Battlefield with max. Well the main terrain geometry they did. Simple displacements !

Maya PLE is free but when you render something you will have large watermarks all over the image. they effect all channels, so you can't much of what you've done.

Blender!!!! <sniff> <sniff>

The first 3d program I started with

That is the all around package. Its hard to start with, not as easy as max but it gets the job done. In fact you could create your own game right in Blender.

They shut down for a while due to short finances but they're back up and published some books on the basics and how to create your own game.

You can literally model your scene set up your own engine and have ayour very own game right there.

Can Max do that, NO
Can Maya do that, NO
Can Milkshape do that,NO

See Blender is the all around package. Now its not as advanced as something like max but nevertheless, its stil an amazing program.

P.S: Make sure you read all the tutorials or your gonna be lost, take my word for it and if you can go buy their books, they definatly help!!

Here's the link for the site if you guys want it.

http://www.blender3d.org/

And here's a pic of the inerface and the type of game that can be created!!

yeah blender rules.. the only thing that blender cant do as well as 3d max (the other program that i tried to use), its unwrap (or you made it almost by hand, or with external plugins). soon it will be fully compatible with a raytracer, wich will turn things easier....

by the way, i used blender for 1 year, then tried to use max 5... blender is hard???? you must be kidding!!!!! i need to read max help just to know how to select a vertex!!

Dude I was 9 years old when I first tried Blender.

As for max I found it to be pretty easy, hard to say cause I got basics from Blender

And I have to agree, uv is kinda crap with blender but common, its a free 3d program that can create pretty good scenes and IT CREATES GAMES......oh by the way its not that hard to create a game 2. Think you need C++ or Java or any other languages....hell no, you can create a game without them.

A script is a script right?

Well actually I don't know anything about programing, nor will I ever. Thats why I like Blenders game engine because it doesn't require you to know a lot of programing

ah, great thread.

i've just been thinking about what software to use... actually, i've been thinking about it for over a year now, problem is getting time to learn.

i've had a look at the Blender 3D forums, seems like there flourishing, lots of activity and help from the community. and of course, it's free.

one thing i've been wondering... is it the software or the skill of the artist that would determine the quality of the finished piece? i know kind of a hard question. how about this: would i be more of a kick ass 3D'er if i took a Maya course for 6 months or if i just got into Blender and taught myself?

obviously Maya is a massive app, so it would probably take some lessons to get just the basics. but with Blender being a smaller app, would i be able to pick it up faster?

well i guess i should just get into it and start learning, but if anyone can comment on that i'd really appreciate it.

as for Clay info: http://www.rocket3d.com/ - seems like that's an 'official' info page for Clay, they just say not ready for final release. lol & dont' harass the beta testers.

someone gave a link for OpenFX.org on the first page... i just went to visit it today and it seems that they want to educate everyone about the word 'fork'.

i also looked for some info on 'OpenFX' and from the tutorials i found it seemed to be a modelling package? the original poster mentioned it was a renderer?

If u get some books u can teach yourself maya or max quickly. The reading is a little monotonous, but you learn the material. I took a lightwave 3D class at a community college once, and I didn't really learn anything that I didn't already know. If u really want to learn, you will teach yourself. Thats the best way.
