yafray got a exporter (might be experimental... dont know cos i dont use gmax)

Plugin for material dampning of particles!

Fragile is a dynamic plugin which is used to break an object into fragments with real-time face collision and which also gives you control over the spinning of the fragments. It also dampens the spinning of the fragments. You can add the air resistance forces along with desired gravity to create different effects. All other built-in forces available in 3dsmax like wind can also be used on the object.

I've just been on the clay site and they say that the chances are clay won't be freeware or opensource but that it's commercial future is undecided.

Oh well, I'm gonna stick with Blender for now. Once you've gotten used to the interface, the rest is pretty easy especially if you get yafray to render with.

Wings3d is quite good. I think that most people don't care about it much because it's filesize is too low (like around 2 mb or something). Even though it might not seem so at first glance, it's quite good for polymodelling, the interface is ackward at first but easy to get used to, and the interface is designed to be very efficient, and there're a lot of tutorials around.

Blender (http://www.blender3d.org) is an amazing opensource application and the development has exploded with releases back to back, and the user interface is getting more and more user friendly. I don't know why everyone just doesn't use it. And I read in an earlier post about Blender not having full support with an external render? Blender 2.36 has complete support with the YAFRAY ray tracer! And it's internal render is fast and amazing itself. As a 3d computer animation major, I would highly recomend Blender as my software of choice.

i've started with Truespace3.2, and then i moved up to TS6.6, and i've gotten meself C4D r9 for Easter.

trueSpace is the easiest package to begin with. Cinema4D is a bit harsh on the beginners, but if used after getting about a year of practice in truespace, it works like a charm

c4d is the best all-round package there is if you ask me.

as for the free ones, stay the hell away from milkshape. it looks like a very bad version of 3dsmax, which it in essence is, and it doesnt have any use other than to convert to HL's .mdl format.

gmax is THE ****. you cant do *anything* with it unless you know how to use max.

maya PLE... mediocre in my opinion. that watermark itches me to send it back to its maker.

other than that, i think there is one good, Draw3D or something, its quite easy for getting started with 3d, but when you get to know it, and realize that it doesnt have a built-in renderer you decide to send it to hell.

sorry for bringing back old thread.
blender is great for moddeling esp if you want to make artistic images but if you want to make low-poly for games better choose something else it has huge problem with exporting to other formats no exporter in blender works good every one has some big problems of course if you know pythonscripts you can write your own exporter. Blender is great but this exporter kills its potential

if you are still interested in finding a free modeling software, that gives you animation, and good mapping, well not wings because it dosnt have animations, and it is a mess, though very easy and fast, but the only thing is that there is no animation, so I would say ...... not gmax also, because this product was made to make levels and edit levels not to creat GAMES, its difficult to explain but I think that you already saw that you can not save your work or export it to *.3ds for example, though this is not important in game making, but if you are using DirectX to make your games you will as far as I know, you will need to export your model into *.x file right? well thats what I do.

so to make long story short, try 3d Canvas, download it from download.com , it is powerful, has animation, (it got 5 stars in download.com as an editor), so I would try this first, also because if you want to buy it one day, it will be like 60$. But if you are not interested in animations then I would say 3d wings, it is really great, there you can select loop edges or ring by one click for example, and it is really fast to learn and to use, I did some work with wings for games and it worked out very good for me. but no animations!

here's what i would recommend if you want to do custome models and stuff for games, i use Gmax with a .md3 exporter, then i use milkshape 3d to add stuff like hardpoints and what not and then export it to the games, it supports alot. If you just want to render stuff, you can use Gmax and yafray you just need the gmax grab program and the gmax yafray export max script, it can be a little picky, but it does work quite well. Those are my suggestions, BTW while milkshape isn;t free it is quite cheap around $32 cdn or $25 USD.

BLENDER!, It's difficult to learn intially but once you do,WOW, you can import and export just about anything, and the uv unwrapping is allot better now, it's really all a matter of how much you want to put in, I've seen images made with blender that could compare with any of the other programs,
and I think the future is pretty much assured for blender now that its opensource, it will just continue to get better

and the community is great to, if you need help there allot of people around to help you and all kinds of documentation

I started out with gmax which is a ED-version of 3d studio 4 but I learned alot from it. Unfortunately, you cant export to 3ds or lwo with gmax. I've tried milkshape but wasn't impressed. It was only when I bought Lightwave 7 that I became hooded on 3d. Now, Im leaning how to do character modeling which is way cool and to my surprise not all that difficult.

Hello Guys I'm Vishal from India I want to join a Multimedia Course from a good institute can u guyz plyzz sugest me some names of the 3d graphics (3d animation 3d Compositing) etc sinstitute outside India because in india no one teaches tat good as compare to foreign countries. I love Blender... but thats all I've ever used extensively. I did use 3DSMax but never stuck with it. Blender works great and is very powerfull but requires alot of extra work.
