Details, discussion and FAQ's

Each week we give a high-res photo set of a new and interesting object for you to model as accurately as possible.

This mini challenge area aims to serve the following purposes.

1. Make use and promote our free high-res ref and texture library
2. Let people who enjoy modelling have some purpose, direction and fun with other like-minded artists.
3. Give artists somewhere to practice at producing accurate models from high quality photo-references and gain feedback.
4. Help 3DTotal to grow our free resource libraries. We put a lot into these and thought that if the community are willing to submit these models from these challenges we can expand to free textures library to include some meshes also.
5. Win more challenge awards! They are only little tiny gif's but we know you love 'em - Rich has just made you a new set The winners are chosen purely on how close your final model matches the object in the photos.

This thread can serve for the general questions and comments, so please post any below.

Hmm, I am thinking, is texturing hi-poly neccessary? Since hi-poly consists of a lot of details and things, it can be pretty time consuming to texture it all (with proper quality).

I like the idea overall, it's like old SMCs again, though the texturing discourage me from doing this.

Is it possible to just do modelling, not texturing?

The challenge is to get your model as close to the one in the photo as possible, so we are going to have to stick with textures too.

Thanks

Is it really such a good idea to start this in the middle of the week though?

My suggestion would be starting the challenge on Mondays. Then people will have plenty of time to finish their entries and it will become more organized.

Just a thought from a perfectionist

I have started working on my entry btw

I am not sure why we are making a highpoly as well considering one has to be made for the lowpoly anyways. That is... assuming the lowpolys are allowed to have normals.

So do we make the highpoly, use it to cast the normal for the lowpoly and then texture both?

Might be doable, but then you need to do two models... (some people might just texture the normal )

Thumbs up seems reasonable

Yeah this is fair comment, let see how it goes, it's almost a challenge to see if the low polys can look as good as the high ones too?

Calm down guys, there's no need to stress Tom any more than he already is.

The challenge will come when it comes, you can practice making some other models from the texture library at the time.

EDIT: By the way Tom, when the model library is put up, can we submit our own models to it or will you only accept models from the texture lib?

Some new photos have just been keyworded and uploaded but they weren't the set I wanted that had a few good objects in it with loads of angles and close-ups. There is this set http://freetextures.3dtotal.com/index.php?iset=1332&pp= what do you think?

NJ - Yeah once we sort things out we will grateful of all submissions, but we will have to find a way to keep the quality high though like we do with this image library.
